Great ideas and suggestions. I loved the Alteas, but the only thing that suprised me with them was the lack of microwave, which we would really need. It's good to hear positive comments about the build quality, because when we viewed different makes/ models some of the alteas felt a bit more basic.

Don't mistake 'basic' for poor build quality. We're not of the "everything including kitchen sink" brigade and the Altea range are considered basic in as much as not being adorned with features, but as said the actual build quality is (IMHO) very good. You could always retrofit a microwave if really needed?
Any idea of budget and what your towing with; will allow better opinions maybe.

Thanks Paul budget started at 6k but risen to 8k and possible thinking of 10k to avoid buying twice. The thing that got us thinking about buying a caravan was seeing our friends Compass Corona (6 berth). We liked it's modern feel and facilities but are thinking that something with a rear bunk cabin would suit us better. The Adria Altea seems to have the widest bunks which offers more flexibilty.
We have a Citreon Grand Picasso 2.0L HDI semi auto. We've checked the tow ratio and it's not perfect at ~88% depending on unit ~1250kg. So would be interested in opinions especially those who have a similar car.
Whilst we plan to keep the caravan for a while and expect depreciation we would like to buy something that will hold it's value.
NikkiT, have you seen the 2008 (I think) Adria on ebay. Its in Gloucester, looks really nice. They want £9500 on a buy it now, it was previously listed at starting bids of 8k two weeks before they relisted it. Looks a good van to me with a mover, full awning etc.
Have you been to Pearman Briggs, they're Adria dealers and very helpful (especially Martyn). You could have a microwave fitted I expect but tbh it would be easier and cheaper to buy one and use it in the awning. I couldnt see the appeal of a microwave until we got a van with one it. Now we wouldnt be without one.
Know what you mean about budget. We started at 7k, then bought a van for 10k, just sold it (didnt loose any money) and new van costing 11.5k

Thanks savanne1. We did see it but thought it seemed a bit steep - but will keep it in mind now we know the original starting price. No we haven't tried Pearman Briggs, we went to highbridge to have a look at a few different types. We will maybe try and head over there.
How do you find your Bailey, there are a few of those on ebay so feedback from an owner is always good.
We started as campers but have always had electrics. We used to laugh at our friends microwave, but then find that we will often ask to borrow it.
On another subject do you have your caravan in storage and can you recommend anywhere. Our drive is a bit too narrow to store a caravan on.
Hi Nikki, we've just (tonight) sold the Bailey. Its a great van but we were a bit green and bought a layout that dosent work for us. We store ours on the drive but did ring a few places to ask about storage prices. Theres a place at Upleadon that is £480 a year (in a covered heated barn apparently!) and the caravan site on the A38 at Twigworth. They want £10 a week. Lastly a friend stores hers between Hardwicke and Elmore (on a farm) that was the cheapest quote at £25 a month.
I was surprised to see the Adria went back on for more money.
Our new (to us) caravan is coming from Highbridge, they've been great so far.
We saw a 2010 Adria with bunks, side dinette and big washroom at Swindon Caravans a couple of weeks ago for 10k, was immaculate. Dont know if its still for sale. Pearman Briggs are definetly worth a visit, they have a new 2011 Adria Altea reduced and a couple of second hand ones too.

If you wanted to buy new then I think the new Bailey Orion has one layout with 3 bunks from memory.....although they are very light they aren't everyones favourite but do have a 10 year ingress warranty.
goron back again we have a transit van for towing brilliant extra seats fitted for five a mini bus would be my transport choice bikes and all go into the van and when the awnings wet that too transit fuel consumption 25 to the gallon towing in old money only drawback no longer allowed into london because of emmisions , dies on hills but gives time to enjoy journey our c/van is old and 12ft long so microwave is in the awning on a coffee table sadly we're having to look for a replacement to our sprite so going for more room had many years of enjoyment now the adult children still cone but in their own tentage except when there is something good on the telly and then it gets a bit crowded just ordered my uk camping flag and banner so if you see an old van a dog ,grandchild and two old gits give us a toot

We've been very pleased with our Bailey and as mentioned it was a close call between an Adria and this 500/5. I'd originally considered a fixed bunk and favoured the Adria over other vans we'd seen, but to be fair the one lad doesn't come with us now and the bunks (in hindsight) would be a waste of space now. If kids had been younger and more van use, then fixed bunks would have been a definate.
As far as Baileys are concerned, you'll get very mixed views and some folk won't touch them. But if you consider market share % etc., you can find odd problems with most leading brands to be fair. To be honest though, when the Bailey's due for a change, I'll still give the Adria range serious consideration again, I like their 'airy' feel and build.
