Use mine all the time, towing or solo, and on all types of roads. Allows more concentration on the road, without having to watch speed all the time. You just need to watch for speed limit changes and creeping up on downhill gradients; but even this can be controlled by low gears.
In our home town I even use it in a 30 mph limit. The main road is dual carriageway, with 2 lanes in each direction, and 30 limit. Naturally, they frequently have a mobile camera van here, and 30 seems so slow that using the cruise control makes sense.
