Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I have checked and through C and CC (which I'm a member) would cost me about 170 for the kind of cover I get with clubcard (with no caravan cover)..

do you have to be a CC member to join Mayday?

That kind of figure is just too high when clubcard costs me nothing... I'm thinking maybe worth the risj and pay for caravan recovery if necessary, particularly as we don't ever go too far (probably a max of 2 hour drive)

£170 is a LOT! What would that cover you for?

£170 is a lot. We pay about £110 with CC Mayday - but that covers us for absolutely everything. Even that sounds a lot, but the cover is really good - and we have used it. My wife and I are both covered - that includes personal cover too, which means if a car either of us are travelling in breaks down, then that car is covered too. We have had my son's car recovered a couple of times, once when I was a passenger and once when my wife was a passenger. We are covered double journey too, which means if we are towing the van and breakdown on the way to a site we have booked, they will tow us to the site and if the car cannot be repaired withing the time restraints etc of the holiday, will tow you back home at the end of the holiday.

Now, I know many will criticise me for this (but I have good reason for doing it), I even get them out to change a wheel or even a lightbulb, even if it's on my own drive at home.

IC breakdown is reasonable, UK cover is £29 for cars 0-7yrs old & little more for older cars up to 16yrs. It recovers caravan if attached. Your RAC cover is not free, it appears to cost £45 in Tesco vouchers that you could could spend in Tescos.

It feels free to me as the vouchers sit in my kitchen drawer and I have to think up ways to use them before they run out of date, whereas if I use them in Tesco's they get less value out of them plus I then have to pay from my actual money for car cover. £45 worth or thereabouts of vouchers gets me over £150 worth of cover. That is kind of why I asked the question, if I can find cover that covers caravan aswell for not too much more hard cash it would be worth it. But £170 insn't!

In relation to the £170 that is joint cover for me and hubby for roadside, at home and onwards travel

When I am not sneekily using computer at work, I will look at the other suggestions for quotes. Thanks everyone.

Green Flag can be bought through the cashback site at the moment.I bought relay plus for 2 cars for £81 and £36 cashback. £45 for a year for both cars ia a bargain.

Our van is not huge by any standards (shipping length 7.3m) but we found that most recovery packages would not cover our caravan (read the small print).

May Day through the CC fits the bill.

Our £89 at Mayday gets the Premium cover. It covers the car, so can be anyone driving it. We only have one car now so dropped the Personal cover we had previously. The only other car we use is our daughter's, and she has her own cover for the car.

When she lived here and we had 3 cars, we could cover them all by taking the car cover on the only one she drove and personal cover for us, so that covered us driving any of the 3 cars.

Re using the Tesco vouchers.....we usually exchange ours for restaurant and/or days out vouchers, at 3 or 4 times face value, to use on holiday or for meals out. Recently we exchanged some for double value to buy a new phone from Tesco Direct, there are lots of offers on many things. I always try to use them for something we would do or buy anyway.

Go on the website and check out all the things you can use them for, and buy your breakdown cover elsewhere.

If you need to cover more than one car, sounds like the £110 from Mayday mentioned above would do it. Does the £170 cover do a lot more?

If you care to read the link in my post you quoted you will find you get the cover you want for between £49 & £59 including caravan cover & you still have your Tesco vouchers.

Thanks Tentz - as I said in my last post I would check out the links when I wasn't at work and have now done so...

however it wouldn't be that cheap for us. My husband and I both use each others cars so I would need both cars covered and we need home cover too (each time we have broken down its been at home and we live 7 miles from the nearest town with no neighbours) so if I read correctly I'd need two lots of silver cover at £49 and £54 as my car has just had its 7th anniversary.

So whilst cheaper than the others I've looked at still too much really. Thanks though

Thank you everyone for your help.

I decided to join the caravan club as there is a site relatively near to us that I really want to try as it has been highly recommended. I then got a quote and decided to go with mayday which cost me £117 but covers me and hubby for any car.

When choosing your recovery provider you need to be far more careful than I realised. If you look into the small print of many of the rescue services they dont give full cover for caravan- I looked into all of the ones recommended above. Although most of the limitations given didnt apply to us (weight, length of outfit etc) the main thing that put me off was they will only cover the caravan for a CAR breakdown. So if the issue is the car they will help and rescue the whole outfit but if the problem is caused by the caravan eg a flat tyre on your unit, you are not covered.

Thanks again

We only pay £89 for joint cover through the CC and it covers two cars including home start. We don't have European cover which I guess would bring it up to the price of £117.

As I understand it some of the non-club recovery services will recover car and van in event of car breakdown, but will  not recover if the problem is with the van, which the two club plans do.Is that correct?

I believe the C.C. plan is with Green Flag, who I understand have just drasticly reduced the number of accredited breakdown contractors. It will be interesting to hear from members over the next few months if this has impaired the service and if it leeds to longer waits for breakdown service.

I dont understand how you get all that for £89 unless there is a discount when you are already a member? Mine is not european, it was the £89 premium uk cover plus personal cover at £28 so hubby and I are covered, that made the £117

Britannia rescue. I lost a wheel on my van last September.
They were out to me within half an hour. They checked my car for me so that I could carry on home, they took the van to their depot and temporarily fitted a wheel to it,they then brought it back to my home and put it on my drive.
My wife my son and myself have used them on several occasions over the last 20 years and they have always been out to me within half an hour.

You have personal cover, which is brilliant. It means that any car you travel in is covered - even as a passenger. I went to Asda with my son in his car and he broke down on the way home. He has no recovery, but his car was recovered, no problem, as I was a passenger and have personal cover. If it is just your car that is covered (as with the less expensive quote above) you would not be covered in this way. If you never-ever travel with other folk in their cars, then personal cover isn't that important, and you could get away with a smaller premium just to cover your car. For us, both my wife and myself have personal cover.
