We recently sold our '05 diesel auto SF and had to drop the price from £5.5k down to £4,100 to get the sale. In 4 weeks, only one person came to see it (luckily he bought it)...
I don't think it's down to it being a 4x4, it's just the general economic situation - I bet sales of all non-essentials are slow right now.

sold my pajero back in February , no problem at all and the buyer came all the way from cardiff for it , wasnt on ebay either.Got very good money for it , more than what i paid for it anyway and looking on ebay recently they are still holding their money very well.in fact id say i could have got more for it now but hey ho . Certain 4x4`s will always have a demand and a cult following no matter what the fuel price goes to.
ditto with caravans , look at any dealers forecourt and there are plenty of sold signs on 16k caravans.
recession,,,what recession ??

I think it may be the dealers are selling the idea that this winter will be as bad as last and that we should have a 4x4 to cope with it . I notice the prices have risen , especially on small 4x4 like the CR-V . They could be smelling a good profit maker based on fear of snow and ice .

I past two garages today and though they had other cars for sale the forecourts had a lot of 4x4s.One of the garages had more 4x4s than small cars.It started me wondering if people cant afford to run them any more and, i also wondered if gone were the days when they could.
Just had a look on Autotrader to find a second hand version of my 4x4. Just one low mileage ASX3, selling for £1k less than I paid for my ASX4 from new.
I think these older, bigger 4x4s are simply well past their sell by date in terms of comfort, equipment and economy unless you want something that will lug several tons across the countryside.

Ours is a 1996 Toyota Hilux Surf. It has all the comfort and equipment necessary and is very compatible with a modern 4 x 4. I can have either 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive and have high and lower ratio gears. Servicing is cheap and parts readily available.
we bought our terrano eight months ago, very pleased with it so far, before we had a 1.8 petrol mondao, the tax went from £180 to £260 for the year, insurance from £230 to £340, small service £90,fuel consumption on mondao was 31mpg and terrano anything between 25mpg towing and 32mpg solo.so perhaps a little bit more expensive but i can live with that and we do prefer the terrano and hope it will last us a good few years, hope the infomation helps if you are thinking of buying a 4x4.

We got rid of our 4x4 because of the rise in fuel we now have a Mondeo St diesel does the job but at half the cost on fuel, having said that we did have great fun and earned loads of brownie points last year helping people who were stuck in the snow and towing people up hills.
