I cant imagine the police are tracing a stolen caravan that may have been stolen over two years ago. And as you mention it was in storage for 2 years when you saw it so would the police be tracing a crime over 4 years ago! Surely its currently stolen and they are looking for it and hence contacting previous owners. Thats always a 1st call as they have access to copies of the keys so could sell it on and then nick it. I bet its been stolen reciently and after you sold it.
Hi elanman, The police will follow up any link or lead, if they are notified that a previously stolen van may have re surfaced, whether that information comes from CRiS, insurance company, potential buyer, or the original legal owner that the van was stolen from, and Yes the van can stay off the radar for 5 years or more, and only comes to light if involved in some kind of incident, eg: a CRiS check, an accident, insurance check or attempted claim(insured through car insurance while being towed(but van not actually insured on its own), or has been recognised. As the OP post when he started caravanning he did not know anything about caravans, and was not aware that there was a CRiS register to check on such things, it is very understandable. My mate has had 3 previous caravans, bought for cash from private seller, and he hadn’t a clue about CRiS register, checks, towing regulations, speeds, or loading of van, Max weights, and did not know there is a caravan forum here. He bought his 4 caravan from a small local dealer, and still hasn’t bothered to register it,or insure it, no matter what advice he is given (mad). I have come across a lot of people that have vans and are in the same situation as my mate.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
If in Doubt Check it Out.
