Cheap smart chargers are very dubious. I doubt very much they are actually any good compared to the real ones.

Concrete floor thing is also a bit of a myth, as is plates buckling.

Only Gell batteries need a slower charge rate.

Have a look at this site for battery information, it's very informative.

Also this FAQ site is very good for answering any particular questions you might have. Much of it is American based though & it can get very technical. One thing's for sure though, a good quality "smart" charger will not come cheap.

So whats dubious about Lidl smart chargers, check back on here lots of people have them without any problems, I have two, one is 4/5 years old the other two years old. I take it you have experience of them?

I've been lead to believe that you do indeed get what you pay for.
I've also been lead to believe a decent "smart" charger will set you back £50-£80 MINIMUM.

BUT, I sent my dad out to Lidl today, with strict instructions to return with 2 smart chargers (one for me, one for him, as I had to go to work).

I really can't see them being a true smart charger, not for £12.99, but he did return with 2 of them, I have just finished reading through the instruction booklet & I still remain somewhat dubious, but very content with my purchase.
Nowhere do they claim to be a "smart" charger, & nowhere do they say they can be left connected indefinitely, they do say they can be left connected for "long periods" which will do for me.

They also have a "recovery" mode for heavily sulphated batteries.

Either way, they do represent very good value for money & I am very happy with it. I will be testing it very heavily with my multimeter. I also have a large motorbike battery which I think has been left discharged for too long. Will be interested to see if it brings it back to life.

Watch this space.

Although I'm new at this, I think that a battery that is left on charge 24/7 should have a load across the terminals, a small load, such as a voltage meter or an LED (with appropriate resistor) or a very small bulb, to give the charger something to do, mine has a voltage meter permanently connected.
I've got a Lidl charger and an Aldi charger, nothing much between them to be honest, one has an LCD (liquid crystal display) and the other has LEDS, both within a couple of quid of each other and they both do what they say on the box. The only fault I will admit to is that if you have a power failure they don't set themselves up again, you have to restart them yourself.
I believe the Aldi and the Lidl chargers are chinese copies of the C-TEK charger and I've found them both very good.
They are talked about on many forums such as car, boat, caravan, motorcyle etc. etc. and they nearly always get rave reveiws, so I for one am pleased to be the owner of each of the tools.

My caravan battery has been on charge continuously for seven years and the battery is as good as new,I also have a spare battery taken from my old campervan that is 5 years old on charge with a Lidl charger and it too is good.

In theory a battery left on charge should be fine, as long as the charge voltage isn't above a certain level & the charge current is down to practically nothing.

As soon as a battery is taken off charge sulphation begins, so left on charge this shouldn't happen.

BTW, I am pleased with my Lidl charger. Even if it wasn't a smart charger it would still be a very good deal. It has a 3 stage charge as well, which is great.

Look, I am happy (see, I'm even smiling for you. Take note, it doesn't happen often!)
