What we have is a laid back attitude by UK water companies who seem to know nothing about water management. If you take a country like South Africa where in some areas it does not rain for several years, there is no necessity to impose water restrictions as they know how to manage water. Also the cost of water by cubic meter is a lot less than over here. Our water companies are ripping us off and prefer paying dividends to shareholders instead of investing the money!
Sooner or later the government are going to have to bite the bullet & make a national grid for water in this country.
& what better time to do it than now??? Labour is cheap & plenty of people need the work. A bit like building the electrical national grid in the depression after the war.
A big part of it is there already, with the canal network, which would provide good links down to the Thames at least!
Also, Bob61, they did it with gas as well. Now the only clues as to where the massive scar once was is a few posts with orange tops on. (before my time, but I have seen them & asked my dad what they were when I was younger).
Did anyone see the Watchdog last night there was a moan about the water authority and its leaks. With all the preparation needed for putting water in the tap could we not start desalination plants after all we are an island.

re national grid - no real need for pipelines - we use rivers The North East has a wonderful huge resevoir in Kielder and the water from there feeds the Tyne, the Wear, the Tees and after the Yorkshire lot made a mess of their water a number of years ago and had to ferry the stuff by tanker for months, the Swale is now tied into the network so the water flows all the way to York and Hull. And the North East does not get a penny back for doing this good deed.

Been saying this for decades they still do not listen., Should of had it decades ago we would be laughing at it all now. All those in power through the ages seem to want all, give nothing for incentive ideas people have thought of in the UK. Then when other countries pick up on these ideas , bemoan they were a UK idea first. How many cna you name that have been invented in the UK and come in from abroad because the inventer could get no backing from the UK and another gave them the money to develop it. The UK lost out again, and again.
tyhe cost would be prohibitive to run desalination plants. They only do that in places where the freshwater is sadly lacking. We could do what the space shuttle/station people do and recover the water from that excreted?
It was on the bbc news that there was going to be a hose pipe ban down south somewhere, then turned tv over to watch sky sports news and there where going on about chelenham race meeting , and their used 4 million gallon of water to water the course.

Desalination could be an option but have you ever been to Malta? They have desalinated water and it is not suitable to drink. This means bottled water for drinking. It even tastes disgusting when boiled.
There was somebody prosecuted a few years ago for using a hosepipe to syphon water from a bath to water his lawn. The conviction was clinched by the fact the ban is on the "hose pipe" itself, not the connection to the water supply.
By that reasoning, you could be arrested for using the hose pipe to tie your wife up with too... Political correctness gone mad.

Under what laws are hosepipe bans enforced? Any one know?
thanks. found it in Clause 36 in case any one else cares to look. Hopefully customers of Severn Trent will not be affected as our lawn is in a diabolical state at present.
