Ive just bought a caravan, then discovered i cant use my van to tow it, i cant afford a car just for the caravan, i do understand the problems with certain groups of people turning up and causing problems but surely if site owners were given some sort of proof of a home address and pay by card in advance then maybe there wouldnt be so much discrimination ?

We have stayed at the Deepings a number of times and find the owners very accommodating and helpful. A lot of sites tend to state that no commercial vehicles are allowed on site and this is most often identified under their booking conditions. At the end of the day the decision is theirs to make.
I have seen contractors using these sites as a cheap means of accommodation when working away and not really respecting their near neighbours who after all are paying for a break or holiday.
As they say you cant please all of the people all of the time!

I used my VW T4 to tow the caravan a few times. Never had a problem.
Site owner was only bothered by how people behaved. If they didn't treat his site and other campers respectfully they were asked to leave.
Other people came onsite with their work vans but I never saw any poor behaviour.
Saw a handful of people over the years that were asked to leave! Car owners! Should all car owners be banned?

After many years of camping using our very smart,we'll kept van we have bought a caravan and will tow it with our van. Our car is not suitable for towing. We have not had problems at all using our van on camp sites. We usually mention that we use a van and remove our magnetic signs. We will have to see what happens this year

Interesting thread as we have only been back touring for a year having been static for 12.

We usually take my Landy to tow but my Husband has just changed his Navara for a brand new VW Transporter which although is unbadged at the moment is in the process of having magnetic panels to cover the company logo so we thought it would be nice to take the VW now and again this year for a change but perhaps not now reading this! as I wouldn't like to turn up and be refused access to our pitch.

Is it a definite no no for a van even though ours looks like a VW Caravelle/Camper as it has glass side windows on caravan club sites?

I got told for caravan club sites that it depended on the warden, you would be able to pitch but maybe asked to park the van in a car park, which was no good for me as at times the dogs need to sleep in the van

We don't use a commercial vehicle for towing but a couple of our friends who we go off with do. In 8 years of caravanning we have never been declined a pitch, even from the sites stating "No Commercials". A quick phone call to check when booking has always been met with, " Thats ok". Only once did we get asked if they were sign written. That said we have never used "Club only sites." Perhaps they are not as friendly as they like to claim.

Shouldn't be a problem on C&CC sites - "3.6 - We want all of our Customers to enjoy their holiday. Therefore, we ask that you do not trade on site and do not tout or engage in commercial advertising or display any advertising notices on a unit (a firm's car or van with name and description on the side is acceptable)."

There are two sites at the Deepings, so maybe you could try the other one?

I changed my 'works van' for exactly this reason. You can obviously get a lot more gear in a van of sorts, so i swapped the traditional works 'tranny van' for a double-cab pick-up.
I used to have a coachbuilt motorhome, 'works van' and a car. We sold off the motorhome, and bought the pick up and caravan with the money. I now save on running a 3rd vehicle, and dont need a bigger (than we need) car to drag the 'van. And, ive 4x4 running for wet ground if i need it. We are acceptable on all sites we visit, so everyones a winner.
