You've got me worried about using Milton. I am new to caravans and have just cleaned our system with Milton. Hope I haven't done any damage. I guess I'll learn the hard way.

Don't despair as it won't do any harm if you have used it once as I used to use it myself until I found out the facts regarding Milton and it's harmful bleach content. People assume that because you use this product to treat babies equipment it is quite safe to treat water systems but the facts are that most baby products are plastic anyway which Milton is fine used on a daily basis as it doesn't give time for germs and bacteria to breed. It's when we have water systems that have stood for weeks or months at a time that Milton doesn't have the same effect that Puriclean does which is continously tested in a laboratory in order to ensure that it will destroy the bacteria it is stated it will kill. Have a look at the Clean Tabs link below who produce Puriclean and look at the different links which explain exactly what each product is designed to do.
We never ever stop learning even though we have been caravanning for several years but along the way we obtain good advice to pass on to others and this forum is a perfect way to do just that especially where health hazards are concerned. I'm glad you found the 'Clean Tabs' link useful but at the end of the day we make our own choices in what product to use, it just helps if the facts can be be provided by links in support of those facts but thank you for your kind words in response.
i did an experiment with milton as i have used it for years without a problem.i got a stainless steel cup and added a very strong solution of milton to water 50/50 and left it for over one week in the window.after on week there was evidence of a spot of rust on the lip of the cup.i always say do not leave it for more than one hour anyway.found out puriclean stops working after 4 hours but thats long enough.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Now, excuse me for being thick, but never having a caravan before, the filter, does it need replacing and how often? OR will the cleaning clean the filter?
filter needs to be replaced usually at the service however, mine has been taken out because each year it is so difficult to get all the water out of it so it freezes and cracks and we have a leak so simple cure - out the old huge filter changed from outside the van was so different and easier plus ca change!
Can I be really stupid and ask what the filter does? I'm thinking if my aqua roll has clean fresh water what is the filter doing? Like you say, maybe just get rid of the filter?
filters filter they just filter any little bits that might get into the barrel they are not chemical filters like the fancy ones you get for the home so if the filter can go, say goodbye my service agent advised me to do so after all the winter freezing problems mentioned above I have used them since 2000 so I trust them ne'er a problem since!
The filter is made up of carbon which basically just filters the water as it passes through the system. When you sterilise the system you are supposed to remove the carbon filter first because the carbon can break down as sediment which then restricts the water flow. When you have sterilised the system and finally flushed with clean water you can then replace the carbon filter with the either the same one or a new one. How often you change the water filter really depends on how much you use the caravan so if you used it nearly every weekend you would need to replace the filter probably about twice a year but if you only use the caravan occassionally then maybe once annually is adequate. I used to have a built in filter on my old caravan and it was more trouble than it was worth plus an unnecessary expense too. My caravan now wasn't manufactured with a built in filter but find it much easier regarding sterilising and having to replace one periodically. If you regularly sterilise the water system with Puriclean then I really can't see the point of installing a water filter as basically there is nothing to filter out because you have done the necessary treatment yourself.
I didn't think it mattered what type of filter it was I thought a filter was a filter for filtering water. Sounds like a bit of a riddle so please explain a little further as we all like to gain some extra knowledge.
It also depends on the suspended matter in the water. One site I visit has a lot of fine 'sand' in the water and the pump being in the bottom of the aquaroll tends to pick sthi up as it settles and pump it to the caravan. I had one filter get blocked beyond use in two weeks. So no hard and fast rules just common sense.
