bizzarly, its not the cable that is twisting, rather its being straightened out.
The cores inside the cable are twisted as it goes down the cable, not straight as you would imagine, this aids its flexibility.
Using a reel too tightly, or wrapping it over your elbow stretches the cable out, and straightens the cores on the inside, the sheath tries to pull them back, and ends up with a kinked cable.
thicker cables offer more resistance to this.
twists and kinks also get into the cable if you roll it onto these open reels, but then just pull it off the top, instead of unrolling it.
