'Buy Hymer. They use a different system than UK vans - the PUAL system.. Google it and read up on it. They also use anti-condensation boards behind the seat backs.' I thought most vans are constructed with similar bonded systems. They only give a 6 year damp ingress warranty whereas some give 10 years. It still uses plywood, but the bailey system is totally composite, isn't it? I am not questioning their quality but I always take manufacturer trade names like PUAL with a pinch of salt.
The hymer walls are aluminium bonded by polyurethane foam onto a marine ply internal wall, no wooden framework in the walls, the only strengthening comes from a basic aluminium framework. So if water should get through the seals down the screws ( which is the most common point of entry for water in a caravan) then it is trapped by a completely waterproof material and can go no further, should miracles happen and it gets further then the first wood that it comes to is marine ply which is very unlikely to rot. In addition the top is bonded to the sides and the rails are right angle sections bonded with sealant onto both the roof and the sides. Contrast that with other vans where the sandwich is aluminium, Polystyrene and very thin untreated ply with an integral wooden frame. The screws from the flat rails go directly into the wooden framework and water which penetrates is carried along the wooden frame and is not trapped by the very coarse polystyrene board which also becomes waterlogged resulting in the inner board being continually damp over a wide area and with no treatment the inner frame rots as does the internal board.
I bought my van 9 years ago, it has been tested yearly along with its service and has never shown any signs if damp. As to warranty those are in general simply a gamble by the manufacturer, they cost any future repairs into the original price and as long as they get that cost correct they can repair any vans that come within their definition of damp. They only have problems when too great a percentage come back. Baileys alutech can only be a good thing as they have eliminated all wood from the walls and so by definition they can not have any damp that will destroy the walls, they may leak but the damage that is one is cosmetic only.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Chances are that the older vans with no damp aren't for sale. We can't see much point in swapping at the moment as it's dry but if there was a hint of damp starting I'd be revising that opinion.
I have to agree with that we have had our 1990 Globestar for 4 years she was purchased as a try into caravaning before going onto newer but we found everything we wanted in our old girl. Had a cup of tea in her yesterday after the post winter check - lovely.
To the original poster we bought our girl from a dealer but I notice you are near to us in Derbyshire. We had looked at Nottingham and Derbyshire dealers frequently and the only thing we found was rubbish, we got our van from a dealer in Leicestershire.
