we got room now to store our caravan at home. The site we had used for storage for a few years appeared on television other night showing two youths on ctv hitching up and driving off with somebody's caravan.I was amazed but the thought struck me that owners of other caravans in storage usually would never know about these happenings as site owner would not post up a notice now would he.Wonder how many were attacked stolen or robbed from by undesirables while our caravan was there ? we must have been lucky or did our caravan look like it wasn't worth bothering with.

At our place there's a few late 80's early 90's vans which are greener than green, I was chatting to the owner and asked the question.... He said its cheaper for people to keep paying per year than have to pay to get rid of them as most will need a fair bit of money spending on them before they can go back on the road to be scrapped.

Years ago he used to host an scrap a van weekend. The owner would arrange to get a couple of very large skips in and then owners then had to come and dismantle their old vans, then the storage owner would go and weight the chassis in.

But he stopped this as this was too much effort for some people and some people are happy to just pay to save the hassle....

He also said he used to wait 6 months before "removing" vans off site for non payment, but now he cant even remove them off site him self, so he just passes the debt to a 3rd party who chase the money and fees for removing the caravans off his land and then its the companies problem.... sounds harsh but its a business at the end of the day.

As long as the coin is coming in for each space.... that is all that matters..

I've just put my old crappy caravan on a site and they have a policy whereby if you don't pay the storage fees after a certain time, or remove i,t eventually they take possession of the van and sell it.

And I did give my little crappy caravan a wave and promised I'd be back soon 17 (fortunately the site's only 15 mins away :)
