Hi Vonc, only just caught up with this thread.

There are basically three different types of LED lamp you might need, despite there being mainly 2 halogen bulb types used in 12v caravan lighting.

I assume the spot light type you might need are a G4 MR11 type. The originals of these would be halogen, but you want the LED version - see these as example. These are available by some sellers without a lens and while these type work ok, I feel the lack of the lens can be an issue as the bulb fits in the fitting with a circular sprung clip round the front of the bulb, which could allow a short to blow the lamp. Those in the link above (from Lustumlight) have a lens and are in my opinion, a far nicer bulb for the reading downlights.

The other fittings probably use a conventional G4 halogen bulb, however this is where the other two choice of replacement comes into play as the type of light fitting you have will dictate whether or not you need a 'disc' type slim line lamp, or a 'stubby cylinder' type (see illustrations to highlight).

You'd use something similar to this type for a roof mounted slimline light fittings:

... while something like the awning light or bedroom light where there's more room for the bulb and a need for a larger flood of light would use (for example), a G4 lamp similar to this ...

Both these examples are from ledcentre.co.uk

It can be confusing because of the different fittings available, but maybe as a last suggestion, if you can post photo's of the types of light fitting you have then we can say categorically exactly which replacement lamps you need for which.

Also as covered previously, you have a choice of white or warm white. This is pretty much a personal choice and the difference between the two can be quite striking. The 'white' light are quite stark, but I find them good for reading light use (spotlights), however I use the warm white in all other fittings as in my opinion, they give a slightly softer light (not too clinical like the 'white' lights can be).

Choices, choices ...

EDIT: Ha ha, posted this only to find you've now ordered them. Hope you get sorted out Vonc, keep us posted.

This sort of round ceiling light has a reflector above the bulb, so to give the best result These work very well.

Good stuff, hope it all comes together. The reduction from 10w halogen to 0.6watt LED is hugely worthwhile, you'll be pleased I'm sure.
The post has inspired me to update the rest of my project blog, I'll be posting some further photo's on it later on showing the different G4 lamp styles.

I tried several different LEDs from eBay when I converted ours and found the ones below to be quite ineffective.

In the end I replaced them with either of these depending on which would fit the fitting.

OR

Mine came from eBay and I ended up getting them in several transactions until I was happy with the ones I had. I also had a couple of filament bulbs with bayonet fittings which I replaced with LED bulbs intended for a car

Plenty on eBay and a lot cheaper too. What size panel did you get?

When I started rallying almost everyone had a generator, but most have gone over to solar panels and LED lighting now. Not only is solar power free but panels are now cheaper than a decent generator. They might not put out nearly as much power but with some common sense and LED bulbs you really don't need that much power.

It's just unfortunate that a solar panel that is seriously overkill in the summer isn't pig enough in the winter when the output is lower and the power requirements inside the caravan are higher.

Now if I could get a quality wind turbine for £50...

Dave, further to your post above regarding the two different lamp units (didn't want to quote because of the pictures), I found the opposite to be true and found the 'stubby' type worked better for me.

It depends largely of course on the light fitting in which you're using them. I have several up-lighters which would only take the 'stubby' lamps, plus I have a two-setting ceiling fitting (hi and lo light output) and again, only the 'stubby' type lamp would fit as the two bulbs are too close together to fit anything else.

Best advice is to perhaps check the fittings and fit whatever you consider to the most appropriate lamp.
