Hi Iain, just been looking about for an answer. One guy had the same problem and asked for measurements on each side of his van. There should only be a drop of 10mm on the heavy side going by his replies for a bailey 510/4L.

You may be right on your suspicions of wear and tear on that side as the rubber in the beam axle had gone and the van had to be fixed by alko.

Another point that was made ,when traveling and the van hit a pothole there was a "bang" as if the suspension was not soaking up the shock from hitting the hole.

Your handbook should tell you the heights of each side i think also..hope this helps.

Thanks Jeff
Going to take it down the industrial estate and take some measurements. will measure from underside of chassis at each wheel or underside of axle and see what I get. I have also asked alko what they see as being an acceptable difference

Ok,

Done a lot of checks, took the caravan to a fairly level area, took all my measurements, then turned the van around to face the other direction to allow for any camber on the road.

Here are my findings.

Ground to wheel arch, 32mm Wheel arches could be fitted at slightly different levels.

Top of tyre to underside of wheel box, diffrence 22mm, could be various wear on each tyre as one is newer than the other

Wheel box to rim of wheel, diffrence 23mm

Still not heard from Alko to see what they say.

It is not just as bad as first thought, given the wheel arches could be fixed at diffrent levels, it makes it look worse. but still a diffrence of 23mm between the left and right side. The wheel boxes look to be fitted the same on both sides as there is a flange that is used to fix them to the  underside of the floor.

What do you have on the opposite side ( wardrobes, cupboards) ? if  so load them up with clothes and stuff and see what it's like then. With fridge and cooker on one side I personally would expect that side to be slightly lower over the years. Sounds like you have the same syndrome as me, worry to much over slightest thing, to much of a perfectionist 24

hi

yes I dolike everything to be perfect, but as I paid a fair bit of money for it, dont want to be left with a suspension bill in a couple of years time.

All the weight is over the one side, nothing on the other just a table, and a single bed box. The large cupboard is in the bathroom, and as luck would have it, on the side of the caravan that has all the heavy stuff. (the low side). Now thats what i call good planning lol. I do know all the weight on one side will have a lowerering effect, but there must be a limit, or i wouls have thought that the suspension on that side would be uprated to take the extra load. It is also putting extra presure onto one tyre as well. So should the tyre presure be increased on that wheel.

This may sound stupid but have you damp tested that side of caravan ? I am only asking out of a previous experience I had with a weight issue !

Van only 5 years old, bought from.a main dealer. Everything looks dry and nothing looks our of place etc. I take it your thinking along the lines of the weight of water in the panels, if it was I would think there would be some tell tale signs, soft wall boards, smell of damp, mould etc.
I think it is just down to all the stuff is on one side, with the result it might be weakening the suspension more as the load is not evenly spread out. Just need to get some sort of guidance on what is acceptable, and at what point is it cause for concern, I was hoping alko could provide that.
Or if anyone else on this forum have experienced it.

There was no sign of damp in mine for a couple of years due to a good cover up by previous owner, still it taught me a thing or two. I'm sure if you had it from a dealer all is well on that account.

Have you been in touch with Alko, I would be inclined to speak to them on the phone rather than an email as they can be ignored and not answered (christmas period close down). I would think they make standard size chassis according to size and weight of caravans all having same suspension ratings exept for large type caravans. It's then up to  different caravan manufactures design. Worth giving Alko a ring for peace of mind.

hi Agri

I sent alko an email but was going to phone them on Monday just incase they are closed over christmas and new year. I will need to speak to them first before I go back to the dealer, so that I have some back up, that way they might not try and fob me off with some story.

just looked at your two picture's of the height difference and I think your worrying over nothing , when I first realized that my van was lower on one side I thought the worst but after an inspection by my dealer who I've dealt with for 15 years and a call to Lunar technical dept. who assured us that the height difference was within tolerance and the imbalance was due to the weight of the cooker , fridge , sink and hot water tank all on the one side .
As I previously stated we also had 2007 Burgundy Pageant before which also had a slight difference and again its because all the heavy items on one side .

Hi neil and lena

What was the tolerance?

I contacted Alko, the only way to get an accurate size it measure from a point on each stub axle to the top of the chassis, or underside of the caravan floor as this is fitted ontop of the chassis.

Who told you it was within tolerance?

Did Lunar give you the tolerance? if so this is wrong as it is alko who make the chassis as requested by the makers, and therefore it is them who must give you the tolerance.

Alko have no say in what layout is used for each caravan that is built on the chassis, This is left up to the coachbuilder to arange the equipment and spread it evenly. This is what I was told by alko.

Hi the height of the van was measured accurately while parked on dead level workshop floor .
The distance from the chassis to the floor on each side was found to be same so the caravan body sits lower by 1.5cm on the O/S .
I also found that by loading one or two heavier item's on the N/S the 1.5cm decreased by 1cm on the O/S .
so the layout of the van is to blame for the imbalance .
Either way the van tows perfectly so I'm not concerned at all nor is my dealer .

hi
I wouldnt worry about 15mm either although it is slightly over the tolerance allowed by alko, but I am looking at a difference of 23mm, which is 50% more than what you have.
Basically I am not happy that this is acceptable, and as the van gets older it will get worse as the extra weight on the one side is putting extra pressure on one side of the axle/suspension and therefore causing it to prematurely weaken the suspension.

That said it does tow fine at the moment.

Will see how I get on next week.

Ian i have a twin axle and the main furniture is down one side and it has had a lean on that side from new and is now 10 years old and tows without fault.
If all the passengers sat on one side of the bus its going to lean to one side
as above comments ground to axle should be the same on both sides.

Surely there`s an axle that goes all the way through . . .that should limit things considerably?
