GOVERNMENT TOWING GUIDE 2013

Having just read the guide listed above, according to part 2, widths and lengths the way it reads i would say nearly all of us are towing illegal as it states the maximum length of trailer allowed to be towed by any vehicle weighing upto 3500Kgs is 7mtrs.

so either i am interperating the regulations wrong or we are illegal.

I think that this point is all subjective, see below for our Caravan as example:

Year - 1995
5 berth
Single axle
Mass in Running Order (Kg) - 805
Maximum Allowable/Authorised Weight (Kg) - 1000
Internal Length (metres) - 4.35
Shipping Length (metres) - 5.81
Width (metres) - 2.08
Awning Size (cm) - 841
Layout - 440

So for the example above this is fully legal and still does not require additional tests to tow.

Danny

Really good examples. Would you do one for someone who passed their test in 1996 with cat B on their license just for completeness please?

I am trying to convince my husband he can tow and he doesn't believe me....
Feezee

Hi Freezee,

Example 2:

Example -

Year driving test passed - 1995.
Multiple categories on License.
Towing vehicle: Ford Mondeo - Weight 1615kg
Caravan: Single Axel - Weight: Unladen 800Kg, Max Laden Weight 1000Kg.

Total weight - 2615kg

Taking a further driving test is not required

Goverment Towing Guide 2013

If your Husband passed his test in 1996 and your car and van meet the requirements he will not need to take a test.

Good luck with the convincing!

Danny

Thanks Danny
Actually he took it in march 1997. I just wanted to be able to blind him with science for all the inevitable questions he will ask-:/

Don't really fancy towing half way down France without a bit of help this summer......

Hi Dunc

Actually the important point in this, is the body of the trrailer must not exceed 7mtrs (excluding the drawbar/a-frame). Therefore my Abbey Vogue 600 is fine as the body is below 7mts although the shipping length is 7.95 mtrs
