Thanks for those answers. I have a vauxhall Zafira and I am told my max wt I can tow is 1200kg to if the Freedom is really 850kg withall the gubbings on board does that mean I have 350kg payload? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick and 850kg is the base weight then add on fridge, cooker, hot plate, heater, hot water heater etc if so then I am guessing the total weight of the thing is going to be nearer my limit of 1200 kg..maybe just in and just legal??. But these days its impossible to drive anything on the road that does not break the law in some way. I see cars going down the M5 to Cornwall etc loaded up in a way they must be over weight. Any advice appreciate for a total virgin to the caravan scene. I have a number plate, mirrors and a tow bar so far and I am looking for my first caravan so all advice appreciated..thanks Guys and gals
Yes the wrong end of the stick I am afraid first you can only put into the caravan what the chassis plate says so if yours says 750kgs that is the limit and no more. to upgrade your plate to 850kgs freedom caravans will do it they charged me £75 a few years back. The best advice is to load up the caravan and go to a weighbridge, council ones are normally free if you don't want the weight on paper (I take a photo of the caravan with the outside display. then take it from there

it will help you understand car and caravan towing and the way to calculate if you are traveling legally. also take a look on the caravan club and camping and caravan club sites
If the caravan axle is max 1000kg then caravan can be up plated to this weight. It will be safe to tow with suitable tow car. How did you weigh caravan? The only way to establish correct weight is to weigh caravan axle when hitched to car. Provided axle weighs no more than 750kg then you are legal. As pointed out. Way to go is just to get caravan up plated
Good advice. I notice a ot of people load up and then go to a local weighbridge where I am told they will weigh it all for free. Im looking at buying either a Freedom or a Bailey Senator Vermont. The latter is about 1080 kg so Im on the edge of legality I think..
I checked with the camping and caravan club as I thought at the time, if the caravan is attached to the car the front load would be passed on the cars tow ball (45kgs), could I then take that off the overall weight of the caravan. They answered NO the caravan must be loaded and weighed on it's own. I am not saying Opensauce is wrong as what he says sounds right, I am just reinforcing the amount of information on caravans can be different. I agree the chassis should be OK loaded up to the 1000kg limit but you can not get the caravan plated up to that, 850kgs is the limit. I believe if you are stopped it is the caravan chassis plate has the information the police go
by.
quite agree. In any event the Police will look at the plated weight and then look at the weight at a weighbridge and if you are under ..happy days..if you are over...trip to magistrates court. Its the same for HGVs that get taken to the weighbridge all the time. A friend who is a Traffic Cop said they often pull caravans in and take them to a weighbridge. They see these vans being towed up the M5 absolutely stuffed with gear. he also said that occasionally they have a purge on over loaded caravans
If you are not near a weighbridge you can easily check the caravan weight with a Reich Weigh scale it measures the weight under the jockey wheel then each wheel and totals it up I use mine before each trip as it is amazing how much a few extra bits add up. they are around the £100 mark a bit pricey but handy to have
A weight check will be done with axle weigher. Provided car & caravan axles are under their max limits then ok. Caravan will not be weighed separately from car.
Thanks for all the advice . Thats the value of these forums. Theres a wealth of knowledge out there. Im starting to rethink the Freedom. I am still looking towards a caravan around the weight of the Bailey Senator Vermont which I can manage providing I dont add any more weight to it. Fortunately the zafira has a huge boot space so most can go in there. I hope my 1.8 will tow ok. But now im starting to drool over 4x4s...... but how long before diesels are 'run off the road'.
Reading the above prompted me to give you my opinion, I have a land cruiser on the road test they complained when stuck in mud they had to get out to engage the hubs, so a complaint, in fact the hubs should be left in and when on motorways etc can be disengaged, so an advantage. I also have a Brian James trailer rated at 2600 however you can down rate to the vehicle towing I have a C5 so I have a plate from them at 1700. You all keep mentioning Freedom give you an uprating plate this is not so the Freedom jet stream is rated 850 and they give you a downrate to 750 thus meeting licensing rules particularly in France, my Freedom came with the 850 plate free or included in the price, having run HGV's and member of motor industry please stop confusing uprating which you can't do and read downrated from 850 to 750. The message here is interpreting correctly the facts. Obviously, however I will say it if downrating then you must not exceed the downrated limit. I love my Freedom!
One more thing to add!
The Freedom is capable of being loaded to 850 the correct max therefore anybody with one plated to 750 has got peace of mind and nobody will weight it!
Unfortunately that is just the way the caravan industry is.
I bought an Elddis Xplore 304, cant remember what the kerb weight was supposed to be, but after doing some research I found that because I was given the "plus pack" the weight was more than the advertised weight.
I was also told that these "plus packs" are pretty much considered standard (don't know why) luckily my car could still tow it, but it does seem strange to advertise one weight, knowing that its wrong.
Any caravan or trailer can be up plated to the max rating of axle which will be marked on the axle. So if Freedom caravan has 1tonne axle & is fitted with new plate on caravan marked as that then it can be up to 1 tonne on axle weigher when attached to tow vehicle.
One has to beware of uplating larger caravans in case extra weight requires driver to have B+E licence.
