The sonic mouse repellents don't work. Tried one on a neighbour's pet mice, and there was no response at all. They seemed totally unaware when it was switched on right next to them.

I know someone else who tried this as well only to find out that the device had got duff batteries installed. What's your solution to the problem then as many criticise this device but unfortunately have no alternative?

Thanks Jeff for that information as it shows that I'm not the only one in support of this battery operated sonic repeller as I previously said that it works for some and not others. It's strange how you try to offer people good advice and yet you get a minority who try to defeat what this forum is all about. If something doesn't work then advise the OP something that actually does.
Tango, I was not having a go at you, I was merely reporting what I have read in academic research and from working as a pest controller. I would hate for someone to rely on an electronic device and then find their pride and joy had been damaged by rodents. By all means if you believe in them go ahead and use them.
As far as I am concerned the main prevention methods are removal of food sources, preventing the ingress of the rodents by proofing and finally extermination using bait stations with either traps or rodenticide. Once cleared the bait stations can be used with non toxic indicator monitoring bait that will show when any rodent re enter the area.

We tried mothballs from a local hardware shop they really ponged.went back to caravan only to find the mice had tried to eat them.
this old mothball cure was recommended to me by an old chap who swore by it.cant see how it works says i, have you ever smelt mothballs he asks, no says i cant get their legs far enough apart.
I've just had the same problem. When I got the van out of the barn where it's stored after the long winter we've just had I found mice had been in and made a right mess in some of the overhead lockers.
They have gnawed through the ventilation slots in the bottom of the lockers to gain access and made a nest in a blanket, it stunk of urine and there were droppings everywhere.
Also they had pulled the insulation off of the back of the oven and gone inside there too.
I had left a barbecue uncleaned in the front locker of the van which attracted them in, they then crawled up inside the front corner pillar beside the front window and Chewed a tiny hole through the trim behind a curtain and gained access to the inside.
I've now covered every vent under the van with a finer steel mesh from B&Q which still allows ventilation.
I've also sealed the gaps in the front locker and front pillars with expanding foam but you must leave ventilation in your locker if your gas cylinder is there to allow air to circulate in case of a leak so I've covered
that with mesh too.
I've checked thoroughly under the van and sealed every small gap around pipes and cables with silicone sealant. As for the gas fire when you look under the van you will see that where it is screwed to the floor if its not been fitted very well like mine there will be small gaps that a mouse could get through so I've filled these gaps with wire wool as apparently mice don't like it, but mesh would be great providing you don't block off any ventilation to the fire.
Also another tip I've seen on the net is to spray jeyes fluid on the legs, jockey wheel leg and inside the wheel arches as they don't like the smell and it gets rid of the urine trail that They leave. I am also blocking the waste pipe outlets when in storage with a cut up pan scourer. I hope that this is enough to stop the little blighters, if not I'll post again!
Regarding the gas fire and other gas appliances obviously it's critical that you don't block off any ventilation or flues. If in any doubt at all consult a qualified gas engineer!
Ps my van is a Coachman Genius 460/4, 1997.
Hope all the info helps.
