Just took the plunge and got a Caravan. love camping but the tent got ruined last October high winds and rain and it got very cold. We Camp with family and they have a caravan so we decided to get a Caravan rather than a tent.

Hoping to get away for a few days over the May Bank Holiday and going to the Isle of Wight in August. Can't wait.

We are new to caravanning, just bought a 2006 Eldiss Firestorm 556 6berth as our first van 3 weeks ago, I work a 2 weeks on 2 off rota so havent been away in her yet, hopefully get away somewhere local this weekend :) and the weekend after :)

We always knew we would upgrade to a caravan from camping, we loved camping but the weather last year was awfull and when we went to france, we got there late, took ages to pitch (always did coz we take everything barry the kitchen sink) and the same going home, we watched our pitch neighbours in the caravan throw a few things in the van unplug the water hogs ect, hitch up and and drive off and I thought, thats it im getting a caravan next year lol while we were rolling around the ground sweating and getting dusty trying to fold our tent and force it back into the bag :)

I joined the forum last year after buying our 'well loved' Lunar. We had done a bit of camping at festivals and as overspill from parties in peoples back gardens.
We unexpectedly added child number four to our family last year and one day I just thought about trying to camp with a baby and the older three kids and dealing with rain and wind etc whilst setting up and I just thought "what about a caravan" that evening my hubby came home and I said "I want a caravan" he looked at me wide eyed and said "really??" "yep!" "thats odd because I've been looking at one for sale and I want one to!"

We had never even remotely discussed a caravan before. We decided weird coincidences like that should be acted on and found ourselves a caravan.

WE LOVE IT! He grew up campervanning and his mother turns her nose up at our little caravan, as far as she is concerned only campervans are worth bothering with! I dont think I could have fit three teeangers two adults and a baby comfortably in a camper though and there is all the cost of another vehicle to tax and insure.

We are still learning as we go and working out the best way to do stuff but really enjoying ourselves :) I like it better than camping.

We also are newbies to the world of caravans. After an extremely wet & windy Easter on the Isle of Wight last year in our campervan & almost losing the awning to mother nature we decided to sell up.
Over the course of a few months deliberating finally bought a caravan towards the end of the year. What with work commitments & the rubbish winter we've had we haven't been away in it yet but hopefully next weekend will be our 1st.

It's great hearing everyone's stories and excitement. Coming from a camping background every anticaipated holiday was bitter sweet; the excitement of putting up the tent and arranging everything, but the constant watching of the weather to see if you were going to have to decamp early due to bad weather. One year we had horrendous gales and feared for the tent, couldn't sleep because the tent was banging our heads, but had to stay where we were because it was too dangerous to unpeg the tent and take it down.

Now we have had two weekends away and are so relaxed and recharged. Even OH who said he would never tow a caravan again (we had one in the 80's and 90's) loves everything about it.It was quite windy on Friday so he towed at 50mph and commented when we arrived at how relaxed he had felt through the whole journey. On Sunday no wind but he still towed at 50mph and we arrived home ready to face the week. I might add the journey was dual carriage way all the wa.

What do you dred agde?

We have a horrendous driveway (first it goes up then it goes down) that needs us to use planks under the caravan wheels then the car wheel, being moved further along as the car reverses just to get it back on the drive without 'grounding out' and all the time we are negotiating the parked cars in the street and the neighbours beast of a car on our shared drive as well as a 30 min window before the next hopper bus (and miserable angry driver) comes down our narrow little back street. Oh and we have a sticky out porch roof we must make sure we don't get to close to. We literally have the width of the caravan plus 5 inches on one side and about 1.5 ft on the other door side to fit perfectly into.

I find i start feeling a bit anxious the night before we pack up and positively chewing my own arm off an hour from home. I do the block moving the hubby does the reversing (and we are still newbies so learning the way the van moves as it reverses).

I feel ill just talking about it!

I still love the time away though and I even love cleaning and tidying the van when we get home (well unless the neighbours are about then I just feel like they are muttering under their breath as they get into their car...).

We bought our van aug last year after my husbands health deteriorated, with 3 young children I was finding it too much to set up and pack away alone. That and a few wet trips (which wasn't my primary concern). My parents came with us a few times and were upset to see me struggle. So they helped us to buy one :-)
Since then we have had 3 week holidays and a few weekends, one when we went without the children, which I just wouldn't have done in the tent. Also 3 weekend trips, we are currently away in Norfolk for the week when we set off last week it was snowing, we wouldn't have come in the tent, but didn't think twice with the van.
I love my tent and really must get my head round selling the beauty, but..... I loved camping, the question is do I love my caravan enough to sell canvas!
So much more to learn with the caravan, but we're getting there!

Yep, another newbie here.

last 2 years in Vango Maritsa 700 tent.

Made the mistake last october of going to the NEC and due to pressure from OH came away with a van.

had first proper outing over Easter, also encountered problems. Jury is still out for me as I relaxed more in the Tent but time will tell when we know what we are doing

It's nice to know there are so many newbies out there with the same queries and concerns but it's also good to know there are so many experienced people who are happy to give us newbies advice! Bless you all! And I really hope we have some nice weather this year so we can all (campers as well), get out and about and have a wonderful time!

We have both, but I must say in the time it takes to set the tent up and all the added extras we have accumulated over the years it was getting ridiculous so our tenting days are getting less.... besides the van is far more comfortable

I have yet to buy a tin tent but after last year's so called summer i cannot face another year in a tent. I love our tent but after taking it down in a gale with the kids in the car and me screaming at oh i cannot face it again. I do worry about towing it 'slowly', trying to park it and what the neighbours may think but what the heck with all your fab positive posts i'm up for it

We made the change last September after taking 6 hours to put up and sort out our family tent in 38' in France.

Everything was in the trailer, my wife doesn't tow, and I'd had enough of having to do all the driving and then put it all up.

Been out a couple of times in our caravan now, and its just so much easier. No worrying about the weather or how everything has to go back into the car so it all fits.

We swapped over a couple or years back, still like the idea of camping now and again though.

In the late sixies 'I 'had a tent, then it became 'We' had a tent. Chidren then arrived so the tent was made bigger. This was followed by a caravan in the late seventies. The children grew up and did not want to go on holiday with us any more. Bye bye caravan, hello foreign holidays! Having travelled from West coast USA to China to Africa and lot's of bits in between and now both on pensions, we are back in a caravan as from last September. Bliss! Good old Blighty, here we come.
