Did the bubbles test ,a bubble grew and grew from where the pigtail screw into the bottle. Unscrewed pigtail and re fitted it ,still smells. So guess it is either the pigtail thread or the bottle? It has only ever been a faint smell but we turn it off when not in use. Thanks for your help.
It needs to be very tight. Are you using just manual or a tool to tighten?
Can you get it just a notch tighter?

Well I am one of these people who has all sorts of stuff in the toolbox "just in case ". Guess what ,I have found some PTFE tape! Never used it before ,how many times should I wind it round the threaded part?
Just to add to the conversation, for the benefit of anyone else that has a gas smell. I thought I had a leaky pigtail and there were gas bubbles developing on the screw. It turned out (after replacing the pigtail) that I also had a blown regulator (the yellow button-like valve on the side of the regulator had sprung a leak.
It seems as though some caravan manufacturers install the regulator too low on the gas locker wall and this means that the accumulating muck & grease in the gas rolls back down the pipe and sits in the regulator rather than rolling back down the pipe to the bottle.
This is why the regulator design changed a few years back to have the pigtail valve on the side rather than on the top - forcing the the pigtail to slope downwards away from the regulator. Mine was one of the older designs, thus creating a vertical loop in the pigtail and resulting in muck rolling back down and building up in my regulator.
You need to remember and put the tape on the correct way so that it works into the thread. If standard thread it will tighten clockwise therefor if you were looking at thread put tape on clockwise also. Make sure you keep it fairly taught also, if its on the wrong way or too loose it will spin and not give you the seal. Doddle really!
