I know it was not my van,but I borrowed my tent once to my sister and her family.( cost £300 ) for there hols. She gave me it back about two weeks after she returned home, telling me she had aired it out and cleaned it. Next time we went on hols a few months later,I was gutted to open it with it full if mold and mildew, and two rips in the inner tent. Confronted my sister who denied everything stating it was like that when they used it. Never again.

I would go with Tentz idea and suggest a static van for a week.
That way they still get a holiday and you get peace of mind!

Would your sister really enjoy the holidays if she had be constantly watching the children. The children wouldn't either if Mum was always on their case telling them to be careful. Try explaining it to her that way and maybe she wont want to borrow it.

Install a spy camera linked to the web with a big X factor style light and noise.

After our very first new caravan was returned to us with a fag burn in one of the seats after lending it to friends for the week, I vowed and declared never to let anyone loose with one of our caravans ever again, and thirty years on we have still stuck to that rule.

However, were not mean, and realise that sometimes family would like to have a break with us too, so we have invested in a Kampa 390 awning with a 3 berth inner tent, as well as a Quecha 4 man Pup tent, so we can comforably sleep a family of five whilst we are away ourselves with our Caravan. The visitors know that they are responsible fore their own transport to and from the site, as well as any extra pitch fees incurred due to the extra occupancy.

Its worked well upto now, and quite a few weekend visitors have been accomodated, and a good time had by all, who were all experianced campers and caravanners as teenagers and children, and now grown up with families of their own, but are all struggling to make ends meet bringing up their families and cannot really afford a holiday of their own.

Tell 'em you checked with your insurance and the vans not covered for loss or damage if being used by anyone other than you. Then find them a static to use.

Wouldn't be happy lending our van out either. Took us a long time to save up for it.

I used to lend my car to a relative until I found they had a different understanding of car care to me. Used to get it back full of rubbish and with things no longer working. Never again.

I would never let anyone else use my van, even my own grown up children. It's not worth the risk. Be strong and say NO!

Another no here! If you've absolutely got your arm being held behind your back by the rest of your family and you end up having to lend it to them then I would invite them over, show them the 'van and the fact that there is not a mark on it.

Then you lay down the law in no uncertain terms that any damage WILL be paid for!

After they return the 'van do a through inspection while they are still there, note any damage and bill them for it, after you have found out what it is going to cost to repair.

It is still a potential fast-track to falling out though, that is why I'd say NO!

Is it really worth falling out over?

I would want to because I'm generous with people. However, it would still be a no, you need to have a fair bit of know how to run a caravan for a week. Emptying loo, water, waste, amperage, heating, gas etc. - a tourer is not like a static, it is much more delicate and we are constantly educating our kids about how much care it needs. Also the towing, I'm too nervous to tow our van and I've been on the course so understand a bit about hitching, unhitching loading etc. what about awning, could she put it up - I couldn't, if she doesn't then the caravan will take a battering. OH however, wouldn't let anyone else borrow it ever, its his baby.

It would also be a definite NO from me too. We do the same as the poster above, Romany Girl and invite family members down and they stay in the inner bedroom tent in the awning. Our family and friends know how we feel about our van and would not dream of asking to use it. You have a difficult decision to make, good luck!

When we hit hard timess some years ago it was some very close friends who let us use thier van for a week, however the difference was they offered, i would never have asked an put them in an awkward situation. As mentioned in one of the posts i was on edge all week with the kids an i even did my own head in telling them not to touch things etc. while we were there the site flooded the awning was ankle deep in mud although out of our control we felt terrible. I have to say it was a stressful week!! I have very lively twin nephews who love the van but they only go with my sister in law when the wife is there with our kids, i have to say i would not be easy letting them go on thier own even tho my van is old its our pride an joy

I would suggest they can come with us and sleep in the awning or, rent a static. We have worked hard to buy ours and it would really upset me if it got damaged. Also if they did do any damage, would she be willing or could she afford for it to be repaired?
It is very tricky but you can't expect kids to be on their best behaviour all the time, they need to relax and have fun and sometimes that can mean getting a bit boisterous so I'm afraid it's a no from me. If she couldn't afford a static I would offer to help her with the cost and give the kids some spending money.
