We had a few years camping, but after nearly going hang gliding in our tent in Switzerland in 81, we decided never again so bought our first van.Still enjoy vanning now.

We started out camping, but after one trip in north Wales a few years ago,I said enough.Time to look for a van.

We're the tent was pitched it was on a hill, every night we would all start at the top( wife and two kids and myself) only to wake up in the morning to be at the bottom of the tent. Tried putting up our quick set up gazebo, only for a gust of wind to get under it and blow it over, causing the aluminium frame to snap and bend ( £70 in the bin) .the next morning the wife woke me at 6 am telling me there was a bird inside the tent, the kids started screaming the wife pulled the duvet over her head, even the dog got back inside the sleeping bag ( coward) I made my way to get to the bird walking on the air bed like a surfer in Hawaii.

Finally got to the bird who had pooed all over the tent through fright, just about to get him and he flies under the outer sheet. Spent the day cleaning all the excrement of the inside. Fed up eating beans and sausages , so I informed my wife at being 40 it was time we looked at caravans.

We used to have a tent, final straw oneday high winds rained for 9 solid hours, tent pole snapped, got wet felt cold, next to us was a caravan, I was looking out the tent through the teaming rain at our neighbours sitting in their pjs drinking tea all warm in their van.We packed up next day threw the tent in the bin, got home looked on eBay bought a cheap old van for a few hundred pounds, and haven't looked back since. I do like sleeping under canvas but our weather is so bad I just don't think I could go back now, and we now go all year :D

Well all very interesting and scary! because we are in our 60's, and, just bought a tent! Yet to have our first trip, only practised in the garden. Every year the family gatheres at Hurley for the regatta, which is great fun. They arrive in their tents and caravans. We had neither, so always rented a motorhome, which is mega money. So this year we purchased an 8 berth tent (we like our space) and all the glamping bits we could get including memory foam toppers for our 18inch off the ground mattresses. All for less than the price of a weeks motorhome rental. So the plan is to use it in predicted good weather, not that we can rely on that. If we have any disasters I'm sure it won't be long until we start considering a caravan. Though we loved the motorhome, and we considered buying one, we found it limiting to move about once we arrived at site. So unless you go down the route of small car towing, it was a no, no. OH always goes for biggest, with all the mod cons, I pointed out that the cost of all that would buy an apartment in Spain! So back to basics, and the tent. Really don't like being cold, so watch this space, will let you know how we get on. It might be on e-bay within weeks!

Secretharbour - don't read these scarey stories. Look on the tent camping section and read about all the good bits!!

Started camping when I was 3 months old. Camped from the until my father passed away.

After getting married wife had a 2 person tent and suggested going away in it. A year or so later friends up graded to a tunnel tent and gave us their old frame tent went away in that and wife liked it but said she would like a bigger tent.

We got a sunncamp grange and had that from 2004 upgraded to a caravan in 2010 after getting a newer car capable or towing.

Our 1st van was a 1991 swift challenger cost us £800 we didn't want to spend a lot as never towed before and didn't know if we would like it. We have upgraded again now to a slightly newer van.

We decided to try a caravan as we were both having back problems and sleeping on the ground wasn't helping or putting up the tent

Beaubell, I feel for you! I loved my Norfolk Lake, the smell of morning dew, the rain and yes, the wind, when lieing cosy in my bedroom compartment. I loved setting up and playing house. But then I had a health scare and OH and I decided that we would do more with our leisure time rather than spend all week working and all weekend doing jobs in the house. We very soon realised that we couldn't go away for a week-end in the Norfolk Lake, so we bought a Yukon River. It was much quicker to put up but we still felt restricted by the amount of stuff we took and partly the weather. We bought the caravan on a whim and have been away 5 times since we got it at Easter. I am in the van now, it's a beautiful clear evening, but chilly. There is not a soul outside their tents! I'm nice and warm, sitting with my feet up watching birds in the trees with a mug of hot chocolate.

It's different to tenting but I love it just as much, just in a different way.

My husband said he would never tow but it was actually his idea to swap to a caravan and he is like a child in a toy shop! Enjoy your tent and when the time is right you'll get your van!

We started with a small tent, moved on to bigger tent with carpet, sun canopy and job lot. Then moved on to folding camper which we loved but decided to change to a caravan as we always seemed to be packing up in the wet and didn't have anywhere to dry it.
Been caravanning since 2010 and yes it's dry and warm and really comfy but it is different to being in the tent or folding camper.
We are in the process of going to a trailer tent simply to get back a bit more outdoorsy, but will also save money on storage ( we now have a house with a garage and a drive) insurance, fuel, servicing costs and as we only have one car don't have to buy a car that's heavy enough to tow a caravan.
Don't want to put you off obviously as we have loved the van- but it is different.

Rachel

We love camping and have had various tents over the yrs. The final straw for me was last summer in Devon. Very wet, cold windy ..the works. Had booked for 10 days stayed 7 and came home very miserable. the family still talk about my Golum feet (so muddy I had to soak them for hrs!) Can't face getting tent out, haven't planned any trips this yr (usually had 2/3 by now) and went away in hotels last week with youngest.

We both want a tin tent now and are still looking for one that fits the bill....hopefully I will then get back my enthusiasm for camping.

Good luck with whatever you decide

We started with tenting around 1999 with a sixth berth frame tent, but we wanted to extend the season and go away when the weather was getting colder. With work committments you can't always get away when the weather is at it's best. So bought a second hand caravan September 2007. And indeed it has meant we could extend the season. Saying that we do miss the "canvas" and over the years we have found ourselves sleeping in the awning! You just can't get the campers out of us.
So next week we pick up our Eriba (pop top) should be the best of both worlds, can't wait.
Happy camping,

We are another family of 4 who started with tents. I had gone caravanning with my parents and when I met my oh we used to take a big frame tent of his Mum's to have a holiday. Then my mum bought me and my brother a igloo style tent to share. me and oh took it to Mother ivy's bay and spent through night squeezed into very centre of tent due to sides caving in from the wind. Later as our incomes went up we went away from camping altogether. when our eldest, who is now 9 was 3 we decided to get trailer tent. had been looking at them for ages. bought a "cabanon stratos. it was lovely with that sewn in ground sheet and such a big living space. dh was v. reluctant to tow so never considered a caravan. Had 5 years in tt during which time had sprog number 2 and dh had an operation on his knee. in all the 5 years never had absolutely brilliant weather. at best it was mixed, and at worst absolutely shocking. had to leave a north demon site as we couldn't keep tent fixed to the ground as wind was horrific. trying to sort it all out at home was a complete pain. we have often had to come home early just to get jack homr whilst still dry. oh's dodgy knee was making it more difficult for him to peg tt out, and it took on average 4 hours to be fully set up. so eventually oh came round to idea of caravan. it was difficult for me to insist because he was the one who had to take on towing. Caravan best thing I have ever ever bought. love it to bits.

Motorbikes and tents, then motorbikes with small trailer and camping stuff, then motorbike with sidecar and trailer and kids, then car, trailer and a frame tent, then teenagers and a trailer tent, then kids don't want to come on holiday as we're not cool, went to look at a van, bought it to try, got hooked and then got one a bit bigger, love it, after years of hubby being the only one that could ever fit the packing jigsaw together, it's put the steadies down hook up power and water and get the wine.

I'm the opposite of you all. I own a lovely comfortable static, but we are giving tenting a go while the kids are small! I think it is something I would like to do with them at this time.
So we will do a bit of both this Summer and see how it goes.

We started in our 50s. Went from a tent to a trailer tent to a caravan within 6 or 7 years. I still have a 3 man tent for topuring on the bike, though.
