We have used both and as said before grass is great when dry and cut short no need for ground sheet hard standings are good if the ground is wet but you do have to use rock pegs and depending on what stone/gravel is used it's not always easy to get them in and get a firm fix.
The last time I was at Scarborough C&CC site, their hardstanding pitches comprised a latticework of heavy plastic sunk into the grass, rather than the traditional hardcore/tarmac/gravel. Looks green from even a short distance away, makes it easier to get pegs in, but still gives a better surface than grass only when it's wet.

I'm a grass fan because we like to be barefoot as much as possible and I hate picking my way across the gravelly hardstanding. That said If I know its going to be dreadful weather hardstanding is sometimes better but it can be an absolute pig to get pegs in!

Well Ive gone for the grass only because it will be softer under foot and we will be using it quite alot eating, watching tv etc and the dog lies out alot and his 12year old bones would be better on grass I think and also ive heard the weather is going to be hot again and we dont have any rock pegs.

I think you've made the right decision!
One site I was on charged an extra £1 for a hardstanding!
We just spent 28 days on a grass pitch & the grass was well flattened, but seemed still healthy as we left - except one small patch where we'd left a cool-box sitting in the same spot in the awning.
I suppose hardstanding should mean you don't have to do much work to level the van - but it just seems unpleasant & harsh somehow.
Grass for me, and a groundsheet, no matter what the weather. Only once had a wet groundsheet inside, and that was at Keswick and our pitch was under 6" of water. There again we never stay more than 4-5 days on any one site, and that does the grass no harm at all.
