Forgive me - but if he "was about to overtake a car an caravan that was already overtaking a waggon." then presumably he was intending to use the outside/third lane of the motorway. Under the Road Traffic Act, I thought caravans were not allowed in the outside lane?

What kind of ridiculous statement is that? I'm sorry but as a lorry driver myself that just doesn't make sense if you are going slower than the lorry of course it will overtake you!!! The problem arises when the lorry is half way past and then the vehicle being overtaken then speeds up leaving the lorry stuck in the outside lane, either go slow enough to be overtaken quickly or fast enough not to be overtaken...

I will rephrase slightly by saying , lorry drivers should never have to overtake you unless you are going to slow.
I did the b+e a year or so back and they will fail you for going to slow, holding up traffic (lorries on the motorway).

NO I do not agree that caravans should hold up lorries.
My examiner told me that he needs to see you doing the limit and that it is exceptable to exceed the speed limit to overtake if needed to make it safe.
If you are not confident enough to do the limit then you will fail.

If I was a lorry driver and some idiot was doing 50 on the motor way I would be annoyed to say the least.

Jonathan was driving solo, the picture was taken through his windscreen after the incident took place. He said the caravan was travelling at about 65, though knowing the speed he usually travels at I am not sure how accurate that would be.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

many things can cause a caravan to turn over. May be the driver had to react quickly becasue of a bad driver in front or maybe a blow out. On my trip back from wales with my caravan I started to overtake 2 cars. When I got up along the first I noticed they were very close together and then realised that one ewas actually pushing the other up the M5. This frightened me as I had visions of the car in front suddenly spinning into my path, so in this instance I used lane 3 to get well out of the way, even though I shouldn't. Anything can happen on the road, it isn't always the poor persons fault who takes the most damage.

Talking about 4 x 4 vehicles, they actually are not as stable as a car becasue their centre of gravity is so high. The only benefit of a 4 x 4 is power and traction.

its not just 4x4 drivers that pass me towing above the limit. Are there any official figures to prove that 4x4 drivers have more accidents whilst towing or is all hot air and bulls**t?

I can't understand all the 4x4 bashing,I've got a shogun and reason is weight,I want to stay close to the 85% rule pulling our t/a van,but don't want a estate with its ass dragging the floor as I go,which I see lot as I travel along the motorway every day, also a lot more saloon/estate cars overtake me than I overtake

I'm a qualified advanced (not IAM) driver and instructor and it is amazing how many drivers of tow vehicles going too fast! Personally I rarely do more than 55mph, I have a Winterhoff stabilising hitch but this is my last line not my first. This allows lorries to pass easily, and yet still make good time. Lets say you do 250miles that that's a smidge over 4 hours at 60mph, and only 4,5 ish ish at 55mph. At 55mph I rarely need to overtake hence minimise snaking risk factors. Its also a lot less stressful and I use cruise control a lot.

Why let yourself get overtaken by lorries though. Its bad enough when coaches overtake.
Most lorries are limited to 56mph, you should be able to do 60mph safely enough. If you can't to 60 there is something wrong.
The outfit should be more than capable of doing more than the limit which would make it more than safe enough to do the limit.

The 4x4 haters out in force again.

I see lots of people with badly loaded vans overtaking on the M5 - most of em seem to be in big estate cars with so much stuff in the back of the car, the tail end is almost on the floor.

IMHO the majority of accidents are caused by excessive speed, regardless of the tow car, especially on downhill stretches or where the road surface is not too good.

We also have a 4x4 due to weight issues and realise that you still have to drive it well and use common sense when towing.   Stupidity is not limited to 4x4 drivers.

The speed limit is just that a limit not a target. Being overtaken by anything should not be a problem, if it is then you may have stability issues. I choose to travel at 55mph, the car is very comfortable at that speed, it maximises my fuel economy, I find it comfortable and relaxing, nothing overtaking me ever moves the van and what is more the speed limiter in the passenger seat, AKA the wife, who has severe vertigo finds no problems at that speed but complains if I go faster.

Speed is so much part of caravan accidents. If I do 55mph I have some headroom to allow some pick up on downhills or overtaking. IMHO if you do 60mph you hsve potentially very little headroom for this. So why risk do 60mph?

No body so far has mentioned having shock absorbers fitted to their 'van.....?

A mate has had his van fitted with them for a while now, and he's said that the make a HUGE difference.

As well as having an Alko, the shockers have really helped... no bounce or buffeting when overtaking, or when being overtaken.

Just saving for ours at the mo....
