A lot of sterilising solutions use chlorine. Chlorine eats aluminium and caravan hot water tanks are made of aluminium. I know the sterilising stuff is diluted, but over time...
The Elsan stuff won't attack your water system and will remove scale and other bacteria trapping junk.
I know its something they say not to use. I think the instructions also mention not to use on metal.
But the short duration of use and a good flush after doesnt seem to have hurt it.
Its a 1991 van and still working so it cannot be that bad. Maybe worse than if i had not used it though?
Anyone has a water heater rust through?

One thing I get very fussy about while on campsite (and at home!) is hand washing. Not that somewhat ineffective hand sanitiser stuff but proper soap and hot water hand washing. You're in a lot closer contact to the great outdoors while camping, you're perhaps using communal facilities and if you're not you've still got to handle things like the toilet waste disposal system.
So just make sure everyone is washing their hands properly, including before preparing food and before eating. I know it might be a pain to lug in and heat extra water just for this but it is worth it to keep bugs at bay.
I agree with this, especially when using the public loos. There really is no substitute for soap and water.
I use puriclean to sterilize the system, including pumping it up to the taps and leaving overnight, rinsing out thoroughly the next day.
Another thing that can lead to this is not drying out your water carrier properly when you get home. Air dry it outside if poss and leave the cap off so that air can circulate whilst stored. When first filled while away, pump a good quantity through the pipes before you start using it.
