I have spoken to people who are owners of a Nissan X-Trail and all say what a good tow car they are in terms of pulling power and fuel economy. In fact I know of two who sold theirs to buy something better but apparently regretted ever changing it. Says it all what a good reliable vehicle they are.

hi laticsbird ,you lucky so and so,

have just done a quick outfit match on the cc web site, it doesn't make good reading i'm afraid, your new caravan is over your serena's towing limit ,which could mean the police could deem it as un-roadworthy ,which could then invalidate your cars insurance.
it also appears that your current cars nose weight limit is too low for the size of you 'van to tow it safely.
but on the plus side the kerb weight is with-in your cars limit, your engine power ( if your serena is one of the 2 litre or above models) is upto the job too at 42 bhp per ton.

so if were you i'd be looking for a nice ,shiney replacement motor with a 2 litre or above diesel engine
to be honest your spoilt for choice

I've deliberately tried not to throw you the figures as they still confuse me a bit at times

-------------
no tin tent outings booked as yet ,just another cruise in Sept' booked so far

We used to have a Nissan Serena and it pulled our crown regent no problem..
When we bought our current caravan, we did our maths and weight wise were within safe limits, but we were told there was a manufacturer's towing limit of 1200kg on the serena, we REALLY wanted the van so we traded up to the shogun.
Bit of a shame, the serena was a really nice motor.

Thanks everyone...I'm gutted about our Serena as I truly love it. It's so comfy to drive and fantastic for ferrying everyone about in it.

We are absolutely broke at the moment so we would have to sell the Serena and buy a replacement with the cash we get...you're looking at about between £1000-£1200 for it. It really is a fab little runner. What does everyone think? Do you think I'd be able to get a decent one for that??

2L Mondeo estate TDCI.

Perfect car for everything. Or is that rose tinted because i have one?

I cannot be far wrong counting the number of Mondeo's at the C&CC site a few weeks back.

The only thing I would say about the Mondeo tdci's is make sure it has serice history, a lake of or cheap filters can cause fuel pump snee injector failing, £1500 to put right properly.

Also check what the load weught is on the rear axke of what ever car you are thinking of buying. Then work out the nose weught of van, luggage, people etc and make sure the car can take it.legally

Yes I would love to win a caravan after buying a lemon but I suppose I would have to enter a few competitions first.

Congratulations; wow, that is excellent news!!!

I used to have a 2002 Galaxy people carrier with the 1.9TD PD115 Volkswagon diesel; it forever spent its time when towing on hills going into limp mode. Drove me and my other half nuts. We had to be recovered back from Lands End (350 miles) which was the last straw for her.

All in all, a disaster story; just a huge money pit.
The air con had stopped working, the stereo stopped working, the rear brakes seized, the heater matrix started leaking water, the head gasket failed & warped the cylinder head, the variable vane turbo had jammed, the strut tops had worn out, the passenger door lock didnt work properly. As I said, a 12 month lesson learnt.

The car had full Ford service history, had only covered 105K miles, and was really well looked after. May just have been a bad example, for a search around on Google says not.

The Land Cruiser is brilliant; everything works, without fail, in any situation or weather. It will happily tow trailers twice the weight of a caravan all day long.

I cant recommend Japanese cars enough; X Trails (which is a shared platform from the 2002on Primera, which my other half used for 3 years- again no failures), Patrols, Land Cruisers, Shoguns, all brilliant kit if you can afford the fuel (most will run happily on biodiesel- 90p per litre I pay)

If you are going to go away over Winter, a 4x4 makes a great choice; space, visibility, balance, poise and power to spare, and works great in any weather.

Chris

We have a Hyundai Terracan, my husband calls it the tank. Only had the one outing with the van in tow but can't fault it. How I love my Mummy mobile!
We bought it so that we can get out of our estate in the snow, the s-max was beyond useless. The first Winter, sod's law, we didn't get any but last year we did and it never let us down. My husband rescued a BMW that was stuck in our cul de sac in foot deep snow.
So. I don't know about outfit matching but I felt compelled to say, Congratulations! We are new to caravanning, having bought a 30 year old Sprite and I keep saying I can't imagine spending thousands on a new van, that is if we had the cash which we don't! BUT, winning one? I think I could cope with that! Good for you.

Yup, heard many great things about the Hyundai Terracan, the Kia Sorrento and Ssang Yong Musso; all good 4x4 tuggers, capable for the rubbish weather certain parts of the country have to deal with nearly every year.

Have had mine through Kirkstone Pass, Lake District with the snow 2 foot deep, banked higher than the mirrors, to get to a friends Sprinter van who had got stuck a few days before and wanted towing out. Land Cruiser didnt even break a sweat; good fun & with manual diff locks engaged & AT tyres, unstoppable.

As a small note, we go to Edinburgh Caravan Club Site at Christmas & New Year, always get a phone call from the site wardens if its thick with snow & ice; they apply a 4x4 only rule, and we are always good to go!!

Having to tow the caravan on a snow covered M6 and M74 was a new experience though I must say!

I'm presuming you have the 2.2 td auto serena.
I had the estima ( very similar ) and loved it.
Unfortunately it had an argument with a drystone wall during the winter.
Prob is that I loved it so much that I couldn't part with it.
It sits in the garden wasting away and being used as a shed :(

I now use a 1.8 picasso to tow our van.

Congrats on the new 'van! what a result.
Bad news on the Serena. Auto Express once named the Serena as the slowest passenger car in the benchmark 0-60 mph (now 62 mph) test, with the 2.3 diesel version (added in the mid 1990s) taking 27.8 seconds to reach that speed.
A more modern Turbo Diesel won't cost much, something like a Mondeo. Get saving! All the best.
