Gosh, you lucky people.  Other half works 5 and half days a week, so getting away for the frequent weekend here and there, other than his planned holidays realistically probably wont work for us.  Very envious of you all.

My OH works 7 days a week, we have had our new van since beginning of June and done 27 nights so far with the next 2 weekends making that 31 nights. We bought our first caravan very cheap with the intention of trying it for a year. The only reservation was lack of use due to OH working hours, we knew we would love it. Within a few months we went out and bought a new caravan............we were hooked!

The thing that's done it for us is finding a lovely little site near to home where OH can go to work from. We go on Friday after we both finish work, he goes to work Saturday morning at 7:00, back at 4:30 then Sunday 9:30 till 1:30. We have Sunday dinner then get home for around 6 - 8pm. We both find it more relaxing than being at home as when OH comes back to the van, he sits and relaxes instead of "jobbing" and I have time to sit too.

Buy a starter, see how you go for a season you'll probably find that you make the effort to go once you have it.

Very interesting reading, we have just bought our first van for the same reason, wanting to get more nights away with kids after finding out through buying a tent, how much we love the camping lifestyle. Hoping to get a weekend at end of sept, couple days in oct half term and maybe nov? Then starting as early as possible next year prob Easter as we already have plans for feb half term!

We've decided to change from tt to caravan for a longer season. Not yet bought anything though. My DH can't always get as much time off in school hols as me but as Sandringham C&CC is closer to work than home is for him I expect we will go there and he can join us after work during the hols. Interesting reading about trying a cheaper starter caravan. We're trying to decide how much to spend given we don't want to spend as much as would be needed for the kind of caravan I would like.

Easter week, May Bank holiday week and 2 weeks in the summer holiday's.

But now we are going to try and get some closer weekend breaks in with the C&CC.

Even if its a site thats almost on out doorstep. The chance to sit and relax and do nothing is starting to appeal.

When I was a nipper and my folks had their caravan Dad was the ultimate camping guerilla, as soon as work was finished for the week he would come home, have a quick shower and we would be off camping for the weekend.

Mum would do all the victualling Friday afternoon, Dad would keep all the things that he needed in the 'van and we would be ready to go in no time at all.

Dad would even site the caravan somewhere, stay with us for a few days then go back to work for a week or even two and then rejoin us.

Our record was six weeks in France! Dad flew home, went back to work a day then flew back. My sister and I had the most wonderful time!

You definitely don't have to go far to get away for a weekend. We have done a few weekends within 30 minutes or so of home but in middle of lovely Essex countryside on small CL's and will continue to do so if weather looks reasonable in "off season".

Just bought a very small cheap light porch awning for off season for somewhere to stick the wellies and wet coats if needed (easy to dry back at home then as well)

Thanks for all your lovely replies.

Okay, some are suggesting buying a cheap little number to get started.  Now I know peoples views on cheap will vary, however in the caravanning world what is cheap?  If we go down this route we need to be confident that our cheap little number will be robust and safe enough to be towed over to the Alps.  There are only the two of us so a two berth with awning would be absolutely fine.  We dont have loads of spare cash so a little advice and your views would be much appreciated.

Thanks again

Sheila

We did a week at Easter ( as a family), 9 days in August with kids and hubby some of the time ( he left on the Sunday evening to go to work but came back on thurs after work until the following Sunday)', got a week booked at October half term and we may also go away for new year (Weather depending) as I don't want to get sit stuck in snow! Would have liked to get out more at bank holidays but scouting comes first with OH :-(( . Next year hoping to go to France at Whitsun cos kids got two weeks off yay!! Only 23 days this year but can extend the season. Would never have dreamed of going in tent at Easter or October, the eariliest we have been was May Day weekend when my girl was a baby and it was bloody freezing!!!

Cheap is as cheap as you can find. Depends if its something you want to buy and use right away or willing to spend a bit of time doing it up.

Back when we bought out 1st van everyone wanted caravans with plastic windows, But most of the ones we looked at were abosulte wrecks. Smelled badly of rotting wood.

Then we stumbled across an old glass window Sprite Musketeer from the mid 70's. It had been reupholstered and new curtains etc.

No nasty smells, The previous owners must have loved it.

We had that for a few years until (WE) well I decided the twin beds and centre bathroom wasnt right anymore.

I came home one day and said we have bought a new caravan. And we still have it all these years later.

Spread the word your looking for one, A mate got lucky that a mate of a mate had a storage yard and had one to get rid of as the owner had not paid for the storage and refused to pay because he moved and didnt have a car anymore and the van wasnt worth that much.

Paid a couple of hundred £ for a large twin axle thing.

Needed a fair bit of work, Rewired by a blind monkey i think.

Totally agree Jacippit, we have the main two week summer holiday in South of France or Italy with the caravan, then the spring and autumn weeks in UK along with Bank Holidays also in the caravan.

To get extra time in the van we have found two really nice sites about 50 mins from home and every two to three weeks take the van down to one of them on a Thursday night, stay in the van that evening and go to work from the site on Friday morning dropping the wife at work en route as well. Friday after work, pick up the wife, stop for a meal en route to site then in van for Friday evening, Saturday and come home Sunday. We love it gives us an extra 3 nights in the van every two to three weeks!

10 nights north Wales, 14 nights Scarbro, 21 nights Norfolk,19 nights North Yorks moors, and this year has been a fairly quiet one for us with our daughter being ill and going through Chemo, plus a few family gatherings to attend to and a change of caravan swallowing up our funds, but we are retired, and have planned to do this for a long time.

We sold up our Coachman caravan a few years back due to OH always being at work, and us having no time to get any propper use out of it, you really do need to get a min of 5-6 weeks use a year to make it worth while.

What we are finding now though is that we are doing less trips out, no weekenders, and are staying increasingly longer on the same pitch when we arrive instead of touring around in the true sence of the word.

Julia
