Just pray that even though he may be a dodgey dealer, that the van came originally from some one that looked after it.
Make sure you have a service including a Damp check
We were told the caravan was serviced at the end of 2012. We thought the service history would be in with the piles of paperwork we got, it wasn't. All we have is a sticker on the caravan saying it had been serviced.
One thing I did actually do right was to buy a damp meter. It turned out there was just a small bit of damp next to one of the windows which my husband said he could sort out.
Its just so good to get this all out and receive all the great advice. I have been so stressed.

My advice is get it serviced now--before the winter weather comes as if there are any damp issues you can at least get it covered up for this winter and get repairs done in the spring. I wouldn't like a damp van to sit through another wet winter and then find out any faults. Tyres--don't get too harassed, it could just be down to age and standing. Get new ones on, service and then see. Now you are a tin tenter you can camp in the colder darker nights--we camp all year round but even October can sometimes be nice. Good luck, keep us informed. gary
I agree, get it serviced now, as even though it says it's been serviced, you haven't got the paperwork and that may because the service highlighted something that needs doing - like the damp!
If your storing the van over winter, either at home or in a storage site, either put it on axle stands so the tyres aren't touching the ground or take the wheels off and fit winter wheels. This will protect the tyres while stood. I use axle stands . Although some people dont like them, I also use a caravan cover which goes right over the wheels.

34 sounds really low...ours are at 60...have you got a plate on the van somewhere that tells you the corect pressure
re the tyre dates find a string of numbers & letters close to the tyres bead usually starting with DOT at the end you will find the 3 or 4 numbers relating to your tyres age. If your tyres have just 3 numbers they will have been made pre- 2000
A tyre marked 2501 was manufactured in week 25 of 2001
My 95 Sprite Musketeer is 36PSI + stats Tyron bands fitted on a marker on wheel arch.
I think the handbook says the tyres should be between 36 and 43, I am also having Tyron bands fitted. It is booked in for a service on Friday. Hopefully they will know what the tyre pressure should be as they are supplying and fitting the tyres and the bands.
I get more confused as I go along. The tyres we have on at the moment are 195/70 R14 95. I have read that 95 is the loading weight and Its recommended that caravan tyres should be calculated at the caravans MTPLM + 10% (or the MTPLM should not exceed 90% of the tyres max loading). I do not have a clue what all this means
Load index chart here you will see that 95 load index gives 690kg per tyre so 1380kg for both tyres. So provided max loaded weigh(mtplm) is around 1240kg then you are ok. Many caravans do have manfacturer specified tyres that have less margin than 10% though.
For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
I presume there are problems when going under the load, but does it matter if its over, for example 98 instead of 95, just curious.
Thank you also Bill, I have had a look at the book. When it talks about the Laden mass and tyre pressure it says possible and declared what does this mean.
Going over the load does not matter; my tyres are van tyres which were on an offer from my local tyre place, and are well over the required loading. Put many miles on them now, piece of mind knowing they are not being put under any undue strain.
My caravan is Maximum Technically Permitted Laden Mass (MTPLM or what used to be termed Gross Vehicle Weight, GVW) of 1250kg; half of that, per wheel, is 625kg. My tyres are rated at 750kg (Load Rating 98).
750kg X 2 = 1500kg max load on tyres.
MTPLM = 1250kg.
1500kg -1250kg = 250kg margin of safety (20%)
This is a personal choice, based on what was on offer at the time. Important part of the caravan though IMHO.
PS Hope the service goes well, and a good first time holiday can go ahead as a try out!! Some lovely sites in Derbyshire, mabe not far from home...

There are a few places in Derbyshire we have in mind. Just hoping the service doesn't pick up anything major, if so we will have to put it into storage while we save up.

Thanks, I understand it a bit better now.

I think it means that if you ask the manufacturer they will provide you with a higher rated plate for the van, but I am not sure.

Caravan has gone for its service today, fingers crossed.
I forgot to mention, along with my many questions and concerns, when we are towing it feels like the car is jerking slightly, that's the only way I can think of describing it. The car is definitely ok to pull the caravan, I checked with the caravan club.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this.
