A MY (Model year) 04 car should be sold as a 2004 model car, even if it is sold in 2005, there will be differences in specs etc. it can legally be sold as a 2005 registered car, but not as a 2005 model.
The year of registration is different to the year of manufacture/model year of the vehicle, as already mentioned, due to changes in specs, body style/shape etc.
It depends on the wording of the for sale advert? Was it sold as a 2005 model van, or a 2005 registered van.
If you like the van and its in good condition - just enjoy it. I wouldn't be worrying whether its 8 or 9 years old if its a nice van. Doubt theres much if any difference in value?
Use it and enjoy it

Our caravan was bought as a 2004 but there are some factory checks in the folder that are dated 2003. When our insurance came up for renewal this year we switched to Caravan Guard and the advisor told me that there was no entry for a 2004 Sterling Europa 500 - it only went up to 2003.
I've seen quite a few 2004 models the same as ours for sale so i guess it's quite common for them to be dated from the date of initial sale rather than the date of manufacture.
Either way we love our caravan so i'm not really too bothered.
And, while i'm here, Stewart Longton Caravans in Chorley have provided an excellent service for us since we bought it!
