I would never ever buy a caravan second hand from anywhere without getting it checked over by a service engineer first. Our very first caravan was bought off ebay, apparently belonged to their parents who were none smokers, when we viewed he had sprayed air freshener which we later found out it was used to hide the smell of stale fags. Tyron safety bands fitted, found out that wasn't true when we got a blow out on the way home after picking it up. Serviced at the end of 2012, no paperwork to back this up, thought it would be in the pile of paperwork he gave us, it wasn't. Turns out he buys and sells caravans. Try to get in touch with them, no reply. We wont be so gullible next time.

allysson - have you reported your seller to eBay? If he's buying and selling caravans, he has to work to a whole different set of regulations than a private seller.

as white rose says....but are they trading them though or have they just decided to move it on quick.

something wasnt right, so was best to walk away

there are however some great deals still to be had....friends of ours sold their van last week on the bay, and i would have had myself if i needed another.
It was dry and a good layout....someone got a good deal as they had a change in circmustances and were happy to off-load it quickly at a lower than anticiapted price to release funds.
There are honest people out there!

I can not afford to pay dealer prices but I am careful and check everything when buying a caravan. I have done ok with Ebay and have always been as honest as possible. My Ebay score is 222 x 100%. Always check there feedback and what they have been buying and selling.
I bought a caravan on ebay a few yeays ago and sold it on Ebay when I bought my new (used) caravan this year.

There feedback to me.

Touring Caravan 1996 Coachman Mirage inc full awning and extras, 5 Berth £2100

My feedback to seller of my current caravan
Very pleased with the caravan. Good people to deal with. Thank you £6800
Ebay is ok if you are careful.

The reference to ebay has no relevance, its just another place to sell stuff, no different from Autotrader or an ad in your local newspaper shop. The potential pitfalls are no different wherever caravan is advertised. If anybody thinks they are going to get aftersales service from a dealer that sells them a £1500 caravan they are dreaming, they might as well buy the same caravan privately for half the price.

You need to understand the sales jargon, 'New' tyres means plenty of tread due to very little use in the last 10yrs but perished & likely to fail. 'Dry' means no visible signs of damp & 'just serviced' means anytime in the last 3yrs.

Oh yes! and here are a couple more...

With gas fires, 'don't know how it works, never used it', read, packed up long since
Water heater, 'we always use site facilities', again they know full well it's not working.

You cant always rely on feedback on ebay, if someones dealing they'll most likely have a seperate buying account...plus although you SHOULD register as a business seller if you buy to sell or make anything then you sell (even if its a wooley hat) ebay cant/wont force you to, so many get away with not adhering to the DSR's or other benefits/rights a buyer make have from a business seller.

The sales jargon is so true, in fact the last one about using the site facilities was used by a couple on our site who were selling a clapped out twin axle.

We have had 2 great caravans from ebay, have to agree with other posts you havd to be careful an check them over when viewing. We have been very lucky an dealt with 2 very honest sellers an also had independant checks done too. Some of thr dealers dont offer much more security for the extra you pay on forecourt prices. We would love a bigger twin axle as we are seaaonal but have decided as long as our current 1999 abbey vogue remains dry we are best sticking with it

We sold our elderly and very damp Abi van on ebay for a lot more than we thought we'd get - but someone wanted the fittings to fit in their converted ambulance!!!! No accounting for taste. We then purchased a second hand caravan from an ebay trade seller who was really good - we negotiated over the price - but he offered to deliver it to us - a round trip of over 4 hours, and take it away if we didn't like it. He spent over an hour with us explaining how everything worked - and was on the end of the phone when we had problems getting the motor mover to work - our problem, not the caravans. Originally he wanted me to pay up front - however when I saw a report on dodgy ebay sellers and rang him up he was fine about cash on delivery. There really are some good guys out there - but then perhaps we were lucky!!!

Hi lidds0, Best To Walk Away from this one, having said that, when I was looking for a van there were lots of van owners who have owned vans for years, and knew nothing of the CRiS Registration system, or for that matter have not bothered to insure their Van, and after CRiS checks on these Vans found them to be legitimate, though some had been off the register for more than two years after being sold on, and not registered by the new owner. In these cases I would extremely wary of carrying large sums of cash to pay for a Van, there are other ways to pay the seller, Bankers Draft, PayPal, Credit Card transfer to their account is a better way as it affords you some protection if  the worst happens further down the line. ” Beats me why spend thousands of pounds on a van and not register or insure it”. Unfortunately in this day and age not all sellers are completely honest, and the genuine honest sellers are treated with the same manner scepticism as the not so honest sellers. The genuine seller will be more understanding as to the reasons for all your questions regarding the van and the payment method, But hang in there and keep looking for there are lots of good van and honest sellers out there, good luck in your quest.

You have to be very careful when buying off ebay and not make the mistake that we did which means we have no comeback. We went to view the caravan liked it and paid a deposit. Went to pick it up a week later and paid the remainder of the balance. The problem was we didn't actually bid or buy it now off ebay and he just ended the sale, which means as far as ebay are concerned we have bought it privately which you are not allowed to do. We didn't realise this but the seller obviously did. We cant even leave feedback.

No mistake at all, if you pay cash for a caravan after an ebay auction how would you have any 'comeback'? Do you seriously think ebay will fight tirelessly for your rights if you buy a damp wreck? If it is a private seller then an ebay auction is no different from buying from an ad in your local newspaper if you are collecting & paying cash.

If you pay by paypal then ebay might refund after a dispute but caravan sellers if they have any sense will want payment in cash & if anybody makes a good cash offer during the auction they would be daft not to take it & avoid the fees.

If it is a dealer selling through an ebay auction & you go to his premises & buy the caravan halfway through the auction then your rights are the same either way as you are buying from a trader & what a trader sells must be 'fit for purpose', but good luck to anybody getting much warranty work from a dealer who sells cheap caravans.

When you sell a car privately do you give the buyer a guarantee? I thought not. You get the buyer to check he is happy. If the clutch goes 3 days after they bought it would you give them their money back? So when you sell a caravan is it different? You give the person the chance to check it over and tell them what you know about it. I got cash when I sold my caravan on Ebay, marked it as paid and paid the fees. The caravan was 16 years old and I made sure he checked it out and was happy before taking his money so no come backs. I bought my current caravan off Ebay and paid by bankers draft, so I had no comeback. Obviously I checked it thoroughly before paying. About £2000 cheaper than a dealer would charge. Lots of dealers are no better than Ebay for used caravans.
Fred.

But in Alysson's case, the seller is a dealer pretending to be a private seller, which is simply illegal. Dealers are legally required to clearly state that they are dealers, and to accept that there are legal consequences should they misrepresent what they are selling. Therefore they should be reported to eBay - and CAB would be best placed to advise you further, Alysson.
