I can't think what the chemical process is, however peculiar as it might sound, cling film can cause damage/crazing to the windows of the van; if I remember rightly it's a reaction between the two materials.
There has been some mention that food-grade cling film is less likely to be a problem, however I simply wouldn't even bother.
Additionally, if the cover is likely to cause rubbing problems against the window, surely clingfilm itself would be equally vulnerable to wear from the cover.
