??????????????
If you can't grasp what I have written then you will no doubt continue to post incorrect information on internet forums.
Ownership does not in itself prove liabilty..ie just because you own the caravan does not make you liable for third party damage if, for example it catches fire. All clear now?
Our caravan cost us £825 less than 2 years ago my insurance has now gone down to £7.50 a month, I bought 2 tyres £70 and £20 fitting and £22 for a gas bottle and we had an awning given to us, I bought 1 for £125 and it was to big, sold it for £125 bought another one for £50 so far it has cost so for just over £1000, if you pay £30 more for a b&b than a camp site it works out in under 2 years it owes me £250 so all in all I am happy with spending a few quid a year.
Good luck convincing your husband

You state "continue" which indicates I have posted incorrect information previously. Perhaps you can highlight my so called incorrect information which seems to be better than the information you are offering at present.
If someone caused damage to my caravan which is insured and theirs was not, I would claim from my insurance company who will in turn claim from the owner of the unit that caused the damage.

The incorrect information that you posted & continue to post is the suggestion that ownership of the caravan makes the owner automatically liable for third party damage resulting from(your example)the caravan catching fire.
This simply is not true. No, your insurance co. would not claim from the owner of the caravan that caught fire first & damaged yours. If that caravan was actually insured as you claim it should be, then the owner's insurance co would not entertain any claim from your ins. co. as the owner of the first caravan would not be liable simply by owning the caravan.
As most have already said you can chose to spend as much or as little as you want. I would just mirror the thoughts of others. Get the essentials, insurance and servicing. You'll at least know that its safe to tow and use and that should anything bad happen you're covered.
Servicing can cost as little as £120 per year for a single axle and insurance cost will depend upon the value of your van. Our old Pennine folding camper cost £70 per year and our 2009 Buccaneer costs us £250 per year.
One final thought on setup costs are don't be afraid to buy second hand. Water containers and hookup leads appear on ebay / Gumtree all the time. Even better would be if you buy a second hand van that comes with everything.
I have a 23 year old van. Insurance for van, mover, awning and equipment is £53 per year for £1500 of cover. I reckon around £1 per week is excellent value. A couple of years ago some kids set fire to a van on someone's drive a couple of streets away. Ignoring the argument about liability, it is worth it to me to know that I would be covered for vandalism or theft.
The things that cost apart from the site fees . Are the car , you need a good tow car, the insurance , the storage , unless you are lucky enough to have space where you live.
Then a service once a year.
Remember if you sell your van and contents you don't lose that much . Well not on second hand .
It can cost as much or as little as you want and I think this thread shows that. how much you choose to spend depends on how much you can afford and how much you will use the caravan. For us camping and caravanning are all our holidays and have been for a while and compared to renting places and package holidays it seems to be good valued. I think it gives many people holidays that otherwise the wouldn't have. And of course it's great and the kids love it!

Quote: Originally posted by trish0524 on 09/11/2013I don't understand why some people don't insure their caravans. Mine isn't worth much but to me and my family it has always meant we could afford holidays. If anything happened to it, at least we would get something back towards another one!
To enlighten you as to why I don't.....
Because a caravan bought off ebay for £400 would probably get a payout of somewhat less when written off because ins. co's would regard a 25yr old 'van as scrap anyway. I have a cheap caravan because it is the cost effective way of doing the type of caravanning I want to do, not because I can't afford a much better one. Part of that cost effectiveness is saving £70pa on insurance because I'm unlikely to ever need it & the caravan I have, has, in terms of use, paid for itself many times over already.
Same here. My van is a 1982 'vintage'. LOL.
I'm covered 3rd party when towing. I take care of the running side/safety of the 'van.
It's worth a lot to me, but would be literally written off on insurance, that's why I don't bother. My insurance is maintaining the running gear and the gas and electrics.
If I had a big expensive caravan, then it would be insured.
We are talking here about the price of caravanning, I think this thread proves that it can be as expensive or as cheap as you like.
