My advice woud be to change the water filter when there is no chance of frost, unless you plan on going out any time soon. The cost of replacement is nominal as others have stated so once a year will suffice,I would also recommend changing it if you intend to flush out the water system with any form of cleaner before using it.

LlaniDavis - The water at home does not lie in your pipes or tank from one week to the next so is fresh every time you turn on the cold tap.

In modern houses only the kitchen tap is fed from the rising main. All the other taps are fed from a header tank in the loft.
So when you get up in the night and get a glass of water from the bathroom, remember its been sat in the loft for weeks.
Its a good idea to check the lid is secure, otherwise your water will have all sorts of crap rotting away in it

My caravan water container gets filled every day, I usually get through an aquaroll with showering, washing up, drinking ( drink a lot of tea), cooking and dog bowls.
The loft header tank only gets topped up with what you use, so if you have 250 litres up there and use 50 litres a day most of the water is sitting there for many days with the dead flies, spiders and dust

When I got a new Crystal water/pump connection thingy (the old one had developed a crack) I looked at the water filter and what was in it. You have to run a lot of water through it before it clears. And then it is only clear to sight. I`m not drinking that stuff. Out it went. We just use an old 4 pint milk container. Or two for drinking. The water in the barrel isn` there long enough to give trouble anyway, but it doesn`t get drunk.

Has anybody here had such trouble (contamination causing health problems) with their water system?

It would be interesting to know how many people do actually get ill from water, been boating/camping/caravaning all my life, now with 3 littlies and a immunosupressed member of the family we are all still fine!!  17    we have fitted a filter this year to remove taints, but sure it's more psycological!
