On cc sites you can pitch either way,on ccc sites its rear end first, on commercial sites it varies,

I heard all those stories before we got our Geist but they're all baloney - never had a problem with insurance (paid £120 this year), had it serviced by mobile engineers and a Bailey dealers.

We had a problem with the fridge circuit board blowing (twice!) but that was fixed under the fridge warranty (Dometic) with no problem.

Our van is actually UK-spec, so the door is on the 'right' side but our friends have a Hymer and only stay on CC sites with no problem (and the CC are surely going to be the most anal about rules?).

However, on quality, I'm not entirely convinced - our van is a low-budget German van (Geist don't make caravans any more) and I don't see it being any better than UK vans I've been in - in fact, I would say it's pretty flimsy as I've broken a couple of cupboard hinges, the side dinette table has come away from the wall and I've broken a couple of bed slats.

The worst problem is electrical - my rear lights work only intermittently. On the return from France last year, they packed up totally (no brake lights or indicators) and I had to stick a note on the back of the van to warn other drivers! I think that problem is due to corroded contacts in the light cluster - I've bought a new one (off eBay, £35 - they're standard Hellas lights) which I'll fit before our next trip.

So it 'aint perfect but it was cheap (bankrupt stock), so can't complain. Our friends Hymer seems hewn from stone in comparison to ours, admittedly...

As with anything else, you have to compare like with like. If you want Hymer quality you have to pay Hymer price although the full range probably unavailable from UK dealers does contain cheaper models. Hobby though, are cheaper & damp & floor rot are not unknown on them.

Second hand prices for Hymers are still reasonable.   What we have found is that even older models can hold their price better as they are still is good condition when 10+ years old.  The prices for brand new vans are higher than for UK models but then again, you get what you pay for.   If you are wanting to buy something to keep for a good number of years, it's definitely worth the investment.

Buying our German van, which was about 6 years old when we bought it, is not a decision we have ever regretted.   From the build quality of the bodywork to the internal fixtures, it is streets ahead of anything else we looked at.  As has been said, the "more modern" design features are not everyone's cup of tea but after all this is a holiday home on wheels, not a new frock.   I want it to look crisp, modern and functional and this is what it delivers, in spades.

Incidentally, on both private and club sites (C&CC, we are not in the CC) we have been asked to pitch the van both ways, to suit us and the site requirements, and also to avoid directly facing the neighbours awnings.   Either way suits us and no one has ever refused to have our van on site because of the door on the other side.  After all, UK sites have visitors from the continent and have to accommodate them so why should this be any different?
