you can probably apply more torque with a hand winder than a drill i just think the drill or the long bar that goes into it isnt the right tool for the job..
they do work and it comes down to personal opinion.. mine is stick with a hand winder it does a good enough job without the need to carry an electric drill in the caravan just to wind steadies up and down.. :)
I think part of the problem is people using bigger and bigger drills. The other drill discussion has people using 18V jobbies so there's likely a Tim Taylor wannabe using a 24v impact gun somewhere.
I cant believe anyone can have so much bother by using a cordless on steadies. Providing they arent locked solid, by overdoing it on the up stroke, just about any decent 12v drill should easily tackle the job. And i emphasize 'drill' as opposed to screw-driver, which can often struggle with a decent screw let alone a corner steady.
As said, the hex bar is better than the round. And just how you would strip the nut on the end, is anyones guess!?
Best thing I ever bought for the van was a Dewalt Cordless drill does the motor mover effortlessly the steadies a piece of cake and also use for the awning to pile in those coach bolts in the hardstanding, would not be without it.
It takes us a couple of minutes to wind down the legs,no messing with drills and attachments. But as im an engineer i like to feel with my hands, machines cant do everything. What next,a robot to set up the aquaroll and electric hookup.
i have just bought a used black and decker 14 volt drill off ebay for fiver.. it has no charger..
i will chuck its battery and fit a small 2200 mah 3 cell lithium pack and cut of some of the excess length off the spanner bit.. so with some modifications lets say i have relented.. he he
10 to 12 volts instead of 14 should tame it down a bit the lithium pack will save the battery weight and it can live in the caravan.. the lithium pack wont self discharge like the normal drill batteries do so i wont find it flat like my drills always are after being sat unused for a while..
i play with RC airplanes so i have all the bits needed..
trog
ps.. i still recon the hand winder does a perfectly good but i enjoy fiddling with stuff.. he he
