'Tis my humble opinion that the whole industry needs a thorough shake up from top to bottom and by top I mean from government itself.
It might be interesting to form a list as to what should be resolved in order that (a, the punter gets a fair crack of the whip and (b, there is less inconvenience caused to emergency services and danger if not harm to fellow road users due to the ignorance and/or inadequacy of some to acquaint themselves with the basics of towing. Much the same can be said of light marine craft, i e. powerboats. dinghies and that extremely useful toy...the jetski!!
Anybody is able to purchase one of these and then without any training whatsoever venture straight out onto the high seas to cause absolute mayhem. Not sure how I got onto that one but there's a parallel there somewhere!
From what I've read on this forum over the last year or so it would appear that certainly the majority, if not all caravan manufacturers, consider themself unapproachable as far as the public is concerned. To me this is totally reprehensible as it's our hard earned savings or acceptance of having a large debt hanging over us in order to pursue our chosen hobby/way of life, that in fact enables these same people to no doubt live in, what for most, is a very luxurious lifestyle.
I know that the same can be said of certain awning manufacturers too. It's simply not good enough that these two entities, or any others thinking about it, can be allowed play "piggy in the middle" via a dealer, with someone who by definition of circumstance is already in trouble. If they weren't they would not be trying to contact them!! A happy camper or vanner just gets on with it.
I am not normally into officialdom and regulations etc but if the industy cannot get it's act together and self-regulate itself then I think it should be imposed upon them from the top.
Yes, some will say there are already ways to obtain justice i.e. through the small claims court or through the use of legal representation etc but for the majority of problems and certainly those in new or newer caravans, it is blatantly obvious that people are being given the run around.
Resort to law should only occur in the extreme of cases where parties are unable to finitely agree perhaps.Unfortunately we are not talking extreme cases, we are talking maybe not the norm but certainly far too many examples of shoddy work to be acceptable.
Fact; there are far too many caravans being sold that in reality are not of merchantable quality. So what do you deduct from that? I would suggest manufacturers pay more attention to their quality control and perhaps build and design methods than to their Airtours brochures! It's fine being competitive but not at the cost of quality. That will only be suffered for so long.
Why does it take so long, in far too many instances, to seek redresss which for most is basically getting what they have already paid for and for also which, the manufacturer is making interest upon. Pay your money, get what you want and everybody's happy.
What you should be aware of Mr Manufacturer and Mr Dealer is that no longer are you dealing with individuals that you can fob off. The medium of the internet might just raise a voice to reckoned with.
Here endeth the first lesson!!
