mine was about £45 quid direct from china.. you can pay a lot more for similar things..

when i bought mine my son said it will only tell you what you already know.. i said yes but it will tell me instantly without all the p**sing about other method need.. it works.. clip the leads on press a button and it tells you instantly what you need to know..

ps.. it does give a CCC read out but its said CCC is around 7 x the amp hour rating.. which means a good 100 amp battery should read around 700 CCC.. my new one does my three year old one reads 480..

you tell it what the battery should be.. it compares what it should be and seems to use a 50% of as new figure as its replace point.. such things are intended to be used by people that need to know the state of batteries before total failure.. the military being one good example..

Hello,

We are just about to go away on our first 2 night break without EHU.

I am confused when people in here are talking about only watching they TV for a couple of hours a night etc.

Surely without EHU no 240v appliances (TV, water heater, electric heater, sockets etc.) will work?

I always assumed that without EHU you could only operate the water pump and 12v lights off the battery. Everything else (fridge, heater, water heater) would have to be run off gass?

You can only take out what you have put in so if you don't have 240v going in you can't use 240v equipment. You could use an inverter to convert 12v to 240v but it is very inefficient and the battery won't last long. Most of us use a 12v TV in the evening.

We don't have a 12v TV, and would never consider buying one at the exorbitant cost of them.

There would always be something else to do in no hook up.

an old thread and i have changed my methods a little since my first comment.. when away i now carry my 240 volt generator heavy or not..

and believe it or not i am probably due for another new leisure battery.. :)

we used to take generator when of grid or at music festivals but last year on temp holiday site it died. Pair of jump leads 15 minutes with the car running battery then lasted 2 Days will not be using a generator again.

You are correct in that no 240 volt appliances will work, but you can get 12 volt TVs, which I assume is what the others mean. Personally we don't watch TV on holiday. Fridge, heater and water heater do run off gas, but some gas heaters and water heaters need 12 volts battery power for ignition.

a couple of years back hundreds of mile aways from home and parked (for the night) on very steep hill in the middle of nowhere.. my truck would not start in the morning.. batteries totally flat..

it seems days earlier my alternator had died.. my generator saved the day.. :)

From my 12v system I run a T V, charge 2 iPads 2 kindles and 3 smartphone.s. I use gas for the heating and fridge. I don’t believe in roughing it.

I use a 21" 240Vac TV, much better and cheaper than a 12Vdc with poor viewing angles.
I bought a 300W invertor from Maplins, claims to be 95% efficient.
The TV draws only 18W at 230Vac so even if the invertor was say 80%, that would still only draw 22.5W from the battery.
I have a 110Ah battery charged by a 60W folding solar panel. The battery is charged at home with a CTek smart charger.
Regularly run a week on solar with no problems.

Inverters, correctly specified are not necessarily "very inefficient", some get into the 90 odd % area.
I for a decade ran a mains 15"SONY TV off my high spec small inverter and could be away for a long time off an EHU supported by a solar cell.
Whilst now using an 18" Avtex 12 volt TV we were off EHU on one site for 28 days, most of August, using only our 90 Ahr battery and an 85 Watt freestanding solar cell. The battery was as full when we departed as when we arrived. Most days, by 10:30 the solar meter was showing zero amps the evenings electrical power use was already replaced.
With the right kit and moderate power needs one can be off an EHU indefinitly through most of the summer, but burn gas.
