I would suggest that maybe the caravan repair person is not that familiar with the Powrtouch motor movers and because they cannot find the fault the simplest way out is to state that it is rubbish.
It is quite possible that the mover motors etc are all okay but there is a fault in the caravan wiring draining the battery. It may be cheaper to get a Powrtouch rep to check out the mover before splashing out hundreds on a new mover.
I am fairly sure that Truma now own Powertouch and use the same components in both units.
I have had different movers over the years, but find the Power touch to be the best yet. I did have a problem a few weeks ago with the mover keep stopping It would move a few yards then stop, I kept resetting it , and eventually did get my van back on its spot. I rang Power Touch, and found them to be very good. The chap on the phone talked me through some checks, and we eventually traced it to the securing nuts on top of control box (the ones which hold the wires in place ) to be loose. I tightened these and hey presto no more problems.

I appreciate all the helpful comments and although it was the first time I had used this particular caravan repairer, he did do a good job on the caravan with damp-proofing work without ripping me off and I would use the company for servicing and future work. He said that he had dealt with previous problems on Powertouch movers, which included wiring burning out and siezed motors.
I'm not fully decided on what to do, but I think I'm going to rely on reversing skills and the mover does seem to cope with a few yards until it dies. If it becomes intolerable, I'm just going to have to fork out £700 or so and to me, that's the cost of a holiday.

It is unlikely that a skilled Powertouch technician would be charging you £700 for a fix. Expect to pay the call out fee which will be well under £100. The unit may require a cheap repair and you could be putting £600 towards your holiday.
the motors are stock mobility scooter type things nothing fancy..
having recently taken a used powertouch mover system apart and bench tested it before fitting i know they are rather basic old fashioned engineering type thing.. solidly built nothing high tech to fail.. good old fashioned engineering..
all parts are available and they can be fixed by anyone with basic skills.. powertouch are a bit pricey with their parts but at least you can readily get them..
your problem could be as simple as a motor needing a new set of brushes (£10 quid) remove it from the van and have someone that knows what they are doing fix it for you..
it does need to be taken off the van before it can be properly fixed..
and above all make 100 percent sure your battery is good and not 80 percent knackered..

ps.. the only snag is it could cost you an arm and a leg in call out fees and labour to get those £10 quid brushes fitted.. life is never perfect.. :)
