I ran/run mine both on Decent fuel (Shell) and have had no Injector issues. My current one is on 113,000 miles of which I've done 50,000 in 3 years and its never missed a beat. Still on it's original clutch and DMF. They are like every car on the road, they all have generic issues which are highlighted on owners forums. Not many people comment when there car is running with no faults!

Drive both and go with which ever ticks the most boxes for yourself and be aware that you may need to spend money to maintain it in the future.

I have a 2009 Mondeo estate 140bhp with 6 speed box and it pulls my caravan 1300kg, with no problems.

But the clutch on them are on the small side and you can easily make them smell with a bit of reverse caravan parking.

The engine in the Mondeo is a PSA one and is known to be reliable. (injectors can be a problem)

DMF = Duel mass flywheel and most modern cars have them, petrol and diesel, my Mini has one, and if that went wrong I would be looking at £££ to replace.

The PSA engine is,in fact, a Peugeot!
I have driven Peugeots/Citroens, for over 30 years, and can assure you that they do not have any electrical problems.

I often find with French cars that people who own one speak very highly of them but people who don't really slate them. I have owned 3 Renaults my last back in 2002. They were really good and reliable, I don't know what they are like now though.

All cars are much of a muchness now. Its just some folk don't like the French. Most important with any car is servicing as scheduled with OE quality parts used & correct spec oil.

I had a peugeot 306 years ago and apart from the door lock buttons coming off it was a reliable car. I used to drive a citroen dispatch van too and that was very reliable.
If french cars were crap they wouldn't sell any. Maybe they weren't as good 30 years ago.

Had a 99 Pug 406 1.9TD, a 02 Pug 406 2.0 HDI, a 99 306 petrol, a 55 Mondeo tiptronic auto 2.0TDCI, now on a 62 Pug partner tepee 1.6 115bhp.

The pug 406s were brilliant, smooth, quiet, trouble free up to 130,000 plus miles each with only the odd small fault quickly cured.
The 306 was bought old from a dodgy dealer and was problematic. Sorted in the end by the pug dealer.
The Mondeo, was noisy, smoky, vibrated a lot and had a few problems costing a fair bit to repair.
The tepee is super smooth, quiet and so far trouble free.

The ford may use a pug engine bit there is more to a good smooth quiet diesel than just the engine. It's the mounts etc as well. Pug know how to do it, Ford don't.

I do like my pugs much more than the Mondeo.

Your ford did not use a pug engine, the later Mondeos do. The mak 4 Mondeo U.S. A much smoother and more refined car altogether than the Mk3 that you had.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Fords have been using Pug TD engines since the Sierra,s.
Ford bought 1.9td,s and opened them up to 2.3td,s had three company cars over bored pug engines.
Also had three Mondeo,s had to remember not to park under any trees as car would not start next morning did away with auto choke and fitted manual which improved starting so long as bonnet was not under tree.
Plus Mondeo brakes where crap had to give a weeks notice and change bulbs also.
Had from August1999 1.9Pug TD ran till Aug 2005,175,000 till son took over for work, never spent a penny on Pug except for oil and filters +tyres/ wipers it just towed like a dream and ran with no prob,s use to get 51 mpg solo.
Sold to Taxi driver for spares with 243,000 on clock starting to smoke a bit and clutch starting to slip but otherwise in better than average nick for year.

I've had the 508sw for two years now.Currently on 51k at three years old and only real problem has been a fuel pressure regulator which is a pretty rare failure apparently.I tow a Bailey olympus 504(1440kg) with no problems.Very stable and plenty of grunt to get moving. As for build quality I had a Passat for five years before and the pug is just as good.

Or maybe stick to a good solid British made car like Toyota or Nissan?(owned by French rubbish Renault[or do Nissan own Renault, would that be better?]that make vehicles for Mercedes in their French factory)....

It's more to do with the parts rather than the nationality of the guys screwing them together

So you are saying that the French engine is equally good in Spanish Mondy, French Peugeot or Turkish Transit then?

No use asking me!...I've had 14 cars, first and briefly was 1955 Austin A30 and I loved my 69 Sunbeam Stiletto but the rest are all largely faultless cheap to buy and run Fords....currently on the third Mondeo.

To avoid DMF problems and smelly burning clutches. get an auto. So much more civilised. Audi A6 quattro is a great tow car with none of the front wheels scrabbling for grip and vague steering when trying to accelerate with the caravan on the back

Mondeo ours tows brilliantly

We did have DMF problems at 60K and it was replaced under the warranty.

Other than that no major issues, unless you count the neighbour reversing into it just before our last trip. The insurance provided a Skoda Octavia as a replacement which was dreadful.

Personally for me once you have looked at your weight and fuel ratio's I tend to look at the NCAP reports. A bad NCAP has stopped me buying several cars.
