It depends on the campsite. We have a wastemaster which we usually use but on some campsites they are happy for you to fix a pipe and send the grey water into the hedgerow if it is close by. Any little bits of food that might be there are eaten by animals anyway.
The waste food will attract all sorts of animals from rats and mice to foxes and birds. Where animals eat they also tend to cr*p, not brilliant in the hedgerow, but unpleasant to say the least on an organised campground.
If you could ask you mate for his itinery over the next few years I'd like to make sure I'm not pitched near his smelly waste pipe. Lazy Bugger

Any caravanner including newbies should be observant enough to see what the rest of the other caravanners do so the person in question must have seen some sort of flexible pipe trailing to a waste tank many times before but never bothered to ask why.
Before we started caravanning back in 2005 I needed to educate myself as to what I needed so I purchased a book called the 'Caravan Handbook' which explained absolutely everything I needed to know which included the 'Grey' water waste. However, because of the cost of setting up from scratch I couldn't afford a 'Wastemaster' at the time so I bought a second hand basic waste tank (without wheels) off Ebay for less than a fiver just to tidy me over but two years later I did manage to buy a 'Wastemaster' but the waste water was never absent of a container tank at any time.
Any container will do but to let the waste drain on to the pitch is just down to ignorance.
When we started we had a simple 5 gallon plastic jerrican for water, our first van was a Monza with a foot operated water pump!
I found an empty blue plastic detergent container in a skip at work, made an ideal waste container with a bit of pipe to connect!

Some 5 van sites insist on you emptying your waste into the hedgerows as they have to pay to have their septic tanks emptied.
Large sites have proper disposal areas although in France I have sometimes found them hard to find.
As for animals then I would keep away from the countryside, especially farms as they store a lot of feedstuff. Even in a city you are never far from a rat.
When I caravanned on my own for the first time six years ago, not having used the caravan since before the break-up of my relationship, my very first purchase was a length of pipe to go from the sink outlet into the waste container.
Letting the waste water run out onto the pitch is just disgusting - no way would I want to use that pitch after your mate had been occupying it!

I have a very temperamental personality - 50% temper and 50% mental
We were staying at Keswick C&CC site earlier this year. We had a small amount of fresh water left in the aquaroll so my OH let it out on the side of the pitch. The warden saw him and promptly told him off. I then asked what should we do with the water left in the onboard water tank, he said just let it drain on the pitch.Definitely didn't understand that one.
Minimum he needs is a length of pipe to run into a hedge, (obviously on sites that prefer you to empty into the hedge), these are few and far between though.
Ebay time?
Six listings for second hand waste masters within 25 miles of Derby.... Slinky Linky
If he can afford a van, he should be able to stretch to a second hand waste master?
(Even if he can afford new, why bother? - save a few quid for a nights pitching - it's only for grey waste)...
