It's insured for market value UP TO £6500 so it's down to the assessor valuation of it. According to him book price is £5600, which is what they have offered, but they are telling me I can't take the mover etc. off the van. The book price doesn't take account of the extras fitted, which is why I am thinking this offer is too low, and also because other similar vans are being sold for much higher prices.

I would be happy to get £6000 as I think this is probably a fair price with the extras fitted.

Just had an email telling me I can take the mover etc. off but the acceptance forms I received in the post definitely say nothing is to be removed.

I have replied, asking for confirmation of the position. If they say I can take the mover etc. off, then I will and hopefully can sell it on (its in perfect working order).

However, the alarm system fitted as an extra has already been removed, by the thieving scum who broke into it. It's in bits. A new alarm would cost about £250 (it was a wired in system with its own power supply - so I am asking the insurance co. how they are accounting for its value - we cannot sell it on, yet it was part of the fixtures.   We did make it clear when taking out the insurance that it had an alarm fitted.

They have referred the claim back to the assessor now and this seems to have taken them the best part of two weeks to reach this point.   Are they dragging things out, or is this normal?

Meanwhile the van is still sitting in storage, costing us money, and is vulnerable to further break ins as we cannot secure it as it stands.

Why don't you make the insurer an offer for the van with a reduced payout & either repair it yourself or sell it on ebay? You would probably make a profit.

Billy, I had considered this but due to current circumstances we just don't have the time to repair it and anyway, I don't think this is the best time of year to sell on any caravan.

All I am asking is for £400 more than their original offer. I think that's more than fair and didn't expect this kind of hassle with the C&CC - it takes them two weeks on average to send a letter or deal with incoming correspondence.

The other thing that occurs to me, does anyone know roughly what it would cost to get somebody to remove the mover for us, or is it a straightforward job?

If the insurer sets your premium against the sum insured, to pay out only against a lower sum, would imply that they fraudently accepted extra premiums.

Did they lower you premium each year to account for depreciation? I think not.

Anybody who can use tools can remove a mover, no specialist knowledge required. At commercial rates, I guess an hours labour at least would be charged for.

It don't work like that for car or caravan insurance, payout is negotiable at around market value. Insurer asking how much is vehicle worth when selling the insurance to customer is a red herring because it is not actually insured for that quoted figure. It's all in the small print.

No insuer will drop premiums year on year as vehicle depreciates, if you stay with same insurer & renew without question, premiums will rise year on year which is why one needs to always shop around at renewal time.

No, they didn't, you make a valid point...and what I am asking for is not unreasonable when fixing its market value. Hymer vans hold their money and this particular layout is very sought after. £6,000 is a conservative estimate of its value imho and they accepted premiums to cover it up to £6500.

All you can do is keep pressing them but in the death they will give you a final figure & after that theres only the ombudsman. Worth pointing out though that for your insurer to remove caravan & auction it will incur them considerable expense in transport & auction fees so they will be open to what you might consider a quite reasonable offer.

It depends how badly damaged caravan is but I recall from your previous thread it does sound repairable by competant diy'er so the option of buying it & ebaying it yourself could be worth a punt.

I think you will find C&CC insurance cover values is in 3 parts.
1 market value of caravan
2 equipment & extra's (mover, battery,Alarms ect ect
3 accessories ( awnings, aqua roll. tv waste tanks EctEct
I may not have this in the right order but each section is valued separately so their request that all accessory's & equipment are left on the van is incorrect
Please recheck your policy carefully for the actual value placed on the caravan
as the van is a write off you have the right to remove all the extra & accessory's as they will only be paying out for the caravan as it came from the dealer.

you should turn down their first 2 offers & suggest they find an equivalent replacement in the same order as your van which you would be happy to accept

also check if you have "a guaranteed value" option policy
this guarantees to pay you what you paid for the van .
or if you have a new for old policy

Not new for old (van too old for that anyway) and is insured for market value up to £6500.

It quite clearly states on their settlement proposals that no accessories are to be removed yet they have now emailed me to say I can take them off. That being said, the alarm system is already off and smashed to bits so I can't sell that on to recoup its value yet it was included in the insurance quote as they wanted to know if an alarm was fitted (it was a properly wired in job, with a separate power supply, on the panel next to the door). So who pays for that?

I have already turned down their first offer as I feel this was too low and told them the minimum I would accept is £6000. They won't be able to find the same van for that price, private sale or dealer. I have looked and there is nothing the same model and age that is less than £7,000. It's difficult though, trying to prove market value of something that's unusual

Still waiting for a response from the C&CC. Getting cheesed off now. They have emailed to say they have referred it back to the assessor - it's taken them the best part of 2 weeks just to refer it back.

Is it normal for things to drag on this long?   I just want it sorted out now, pay me what they owe me and tow the van away.

Update.

How heard from insurance. They have upped their offer to £6,000 on the advice of the assessor, so not accepting their first offer was definitely the right way to go.

I can still remove the mover, so am planning to do this in the next few days, along with the jacking system that's in place. Presumably I can sell this second hand on Ebay (Seem to be selling for around £250 - £300 for this model).

So it's now officially goodbye to the Hymer and I am very undecided about replacing it. It's finding decent secure storage locally that's the real problem, as if I did get another van, it would have to be another Hymer and German vans definitely seem to be a target for our travelling friends, so rock solid security would need to be the order of the day. This is hard to find where we live that's not miles away and consequently, inconvenient as well as expensive.

Still, I have been looking on the net at Hymers. I will really miss my caravan - so the head says don't bother to replace it, but the heart says "You know you want to!" If we do end up buying another, it won't be this side of Christmas unless a real bargain turns up that we just couldn't walk away from.

Good to hear you've finally got closure on the sorry saga. Best of luck with what ever you decide to do in the future. Though it sounds like the money won't be burning a hole in your pocket for long.

Glad it's been sorted to your satisfaction. When removing the mover leave as much cable as possible to make it easier when refitting.

Thanks bessie500 but we are thinking if it is to be replaced, we will probably be looking at a 2/3 berth now rather than the 4 berth that's just been written off. Kids are both at Uni and don't want to holiday with mom and dad any more (understandably) so a smaller van would probably suit us better - still has to be a Hymer though.
