Brianconwy, probably best but my experience of boats is they drain money quicker than vans but if you are using it, it doesn't matter.

If We buy any caravan is same as We buy any car then they will try & knock you down from their first price after finding an odd scratch. Ebay has furthest reach so classified ad or auction with reserve is probably your best plan, but expect all the usual silly offers.

Boats are a big hole in the water that you pour money into. We have one that we will be trying to sell soon. Ours is on a river and the river licence is horrendous, then there are mooring fees! Chandlers think that anyone who has a boat is a millionaire at least, so money is no object. We did have some good times with boats though, but we just find that we have used it less and less.

We sold ours when we moved house and didn't have storage space on the drive of the new house. Did our first holiday in a gite in the Dordogne and decided that the cooking facilities, comfort and washroom were better in our caravan. We had a year out and are glad to be back in a caravan.

It may turn out that way but at least if I try it then I won't regret not giving it a go. The marina fees are around £1600 a year I am led to believe. I know there are other costs but I can always sell the boat if it doesn't work out.

I wouldn't want to put you off, as we had some great times with our boat, it's just that boating on a river is a bit more restrictive than on the sea. There are only two ways to go, and once you've done both a few times....... Also, on tidal waters there's no river licence to find, although you are more restricted by tidal considerations and bad weather. Have fun, we did!

We couldn't put ours on the drive, as it is 29 ft long, over 9 ft wide, and weighs nearly 5 tons. We are glad to be back in a caravan too, despite it being much smaller than the boat. It does give us much more choice of where to go though. Not just up river or down river.

I always said to my boys we do things for you all year so you can just come with us once a year and do what we like .
We used to let them take body boards ,guitars , and select sites where there was enough for them . They can just find something for two weeks we usually went to Newquay Cornwall .
Then we did start leaving them home to look after the cat. Very handy .
Now they have been doing their own thing for quite a while . now sometimes they bring tents and come to wherever we are . Lol

If you buy a boat I bet all your kids will want to come till the novelty wears off.

If your mooring fees are about £1600 then it will be like seasonal caravaning.

You did not say what type of craft sea going or river sea going will cost you an arm and a leg plus you will need navigation equipment. but river and canal will be a lot cheaper. and you will never lose sight of land.

can moor each night in different parts of the country.
It is possible to sail from Liverpool docks and end up in the Wash via canal and river, a barge or narrow boat start from about£25000 but you could go for a converted ships lifeboat or a river cruiser starting about £5000.

Been there done that over 50 years ago with my dads boat
kids loved it at first but you cant play footie on the roof and tv didnot work on board those days so back to caravaning

I would get a boat for the sea and would be for me. Life isn't a dress rehearsal and I might regret it if I don't try it.

Go for it. we sold our boat last year. It was a 38' motor boat. cost £50,00. £2,800 per annum in a marina plus electricity hook up.   Crane out and back in again twice a year for hull scrub, anti foul, and rudder, underwater gear checked (done by my husband) cost £500 each time. Insurance £250 approx per annum. Fuel around £1000 per year to take us on a couple of trips irish sea, western isles of Scotland and Isle of Mann. Ongoing maintenance/upkeep issues you will always have with a boat, mechanicals, water pumps, heating etc. some expensive others minor. if you're mechanically minded you can do a lot yourself, otherwise add £2000 contingency. (We were once quoted £900 for eberschpacher heating unit repair and £1000 to change a seized impeller - my husband did both himself). The costs are a caravan x 1000. The sheer joy and fun of being out on your own boat though is priceless. We did it for years and parted with the boat for the same money we bought it for - that doesn't always happen. We don't miss it. We can't believe how well off we are now in comparison. But we did it, we paid for it, and we don't regret it, we have wonderful memories.

I have found one problem already. The yacht broker led me to believe that it would cost around £1700 pa for a berth at the marina, but if the boat is over 7m then the rate goes up to £420 per metre. I don't fancy launching from a trailer after watching lots of youtube videos. Berths in the estuary are a lot cheaper at £76 per metre but I bet there is a long waiting list for those.

Perhaps the caravan may be staying after all.

I do my boating in a sailing dinghy. Costs £60 pa for club membership and £110 pa for storage and harbour licence, insurance about £60 pa.

Being a dinghy it lives on a launching trolley which I walk down the slipway, go out have fun, then put it back on it's trolley and take back to compound.

It cost me £2500 to buy with 3 sets of sails and an outboard. Depreciation is virtually zero, probably less than £100pa if that. You can buy a decent one for about £600.

I have a combi road trailer which means the dinghy on it's launching trolley simply piggy backs on the road base so simple to tow then launch.

Great fun and cheap. Only trouble is I can't tow it and the caravan at the same time. Would need a MH to do that.

If you are selling the van probably best to wait another couple of weeks for it to go mad.
