Search youtube, 'bailey factory' 'swift factory' you will see vids of caravans being put together. All that keeps them dry is the mastic sealer applied to the joints so you will see how mistakes creep in & some caravans leak.

It's a sad fact that due to the construction methods most caravans leak. Caravan manufacturers try to keep the weight down so the structures are inherently weak mostly aluminium skinned over a wood frame with styrofoam between the wood and very thin plywood covering that on the inside. If you have ever followed a caravan you can see they flex like a parallelogram. Eventually the seams open up and they leak. Designs like the series 5 ranger used a flat strip to join the roof to the end. Only an idiot would put a joint in a flat roof where water can pool against it.......but bailey did. Other manufacturers placed the join on a vertical surface where the water can run off. Some of the older caravans had GRP roofs like an up turned boat that must be better.

Some cars like the citroen C3 pluriel do leak. But generally cars are of a heavier steel construction.

You're not exactly selling it to me guys.   Am seriously thinking of upgrading tent to an inflatable instead!

Tent camping is just gear you put in your spare room & forget about between trips. A caravan is a machine that has to be maintained with costs involved. This is the price you pay for towing your house around rather than braving the elements under a piece of cloth.

If you have the means then buy new & trade in every few yrs but expect a few things to go wrong & time taken up getting things fixed. Or spend less & buy an older caravan off ebay. This then becomes your hobby & your project. You don't trade in to upgrade, you upgrade the caravan you have.

What you cannot do is buy a caravan of any age & just forget about it between trips. It's a machine not a bag of cloth.

I went from a tent to a caravan. Bought myself a 2003 model in good condition. It is more expensive in every way than a tent, but it is also much easier to live away from home in! I could probably sell it for the same as bought it for minus all the expense of the "upgrades" I have put on (motor mover, tyres, canopy, awning annex + hours of fettling).

If you are not 100% sure its for you then I would suggest buying secondhand and get a mobile caravan specialist to do a thorough damp check etc. Also buy a car secondhand that has a towbar. That way if you do decide its not for you, you are not hugely out of pocket and can count it as a holiday experience! Chances are you will need a towbar for a trailer anyway if you decide to carry on with a tent having experienced the convenience of a caravan.

We looked at 2nd hand and found a 2011 Bailey Orion 400-2 which is the same layout as our brand new Bailey Pursuit 400-2. The 2011 is about 9.5K and 5 years old so only 1 year of manufacturers water ingress warranty.

The new one is 15.5K with many more extras such as Alko wheel lock, solar panel, upgraded upholstery, Alko side lift jack, sky light, extra outside socket, microwave, radio/CD all worth best part of 2K. The van looks superb.

I reckon the new is worth the extra money especially as being retired it is just sitting in the bank earning nothing. Oh sorry, just had a letter from the bank they have increased interest rates. It is now 0.25% pa. £25 quid for 10K and that is taxable.

I know there is a risk of caravans leaking. The new construction methods virtually eliminate wood in the structure but there are a lot of joints between panels and probably worse still there are lots of holes in that shell for all the roof lights, windows, battery box, mains inlet, water inlet, cassette loo and and another for the flush tank, heater flue, TV aerial. All these are potential water ingress points.

Then how about all the grab handles and road lights etc.

I think most leaks will be from these points.

The safeguard is to have a yearly service with a damp check etc. so any leaks are spotted before any damage is done.

If you want to do it on the cheap buy yourself a Dandy. Bottom bit is caravan with loads of room and fixed beds etc. The walls are part wood with the remainder a thick insulated PVC material similar to a curtain sided lorry. Definitely waterproof, virtually wind proof, no flappy canvas. Warm in winter and very cool in summer. Easy to tow and erect.

Buy carefully and it will increase in value. Maintenance is very simple with spares readily available and cheap. It will outlast caravans by a mile.

It is a huge leg up from a tent but unfortunately lacks the equipment of a caravan. Best you can get is a toilet compartment with wash basin but no hot water.

We bought ours off ebay. Bailey pageant burgundy 2007, it was only 2 miles from where we live, had looked at lots of dealer's and caravans. Get an idea of what you want, sit in them, look at cupboard space, where the tv will go, lie on the beds, is there somewhere for a cuppa, handy shelf for keys, phone. We were regulars at our local dealer's. Don't be pressurised to buy. Ours was a divorce settlement, just wanted the finance paying, a bargain. It had damp which was sorted by a local service engineer. Still a bargain. A local service engineer is worth a lot if they're good go on recommendations. He picks the van up from storage, services it and returns. If he's in the area he check the outside visually, storage keep keys and he checks for damp, no charge. We went from vango icarus 500 as well. Good luck and happy searching
