Interesting replies!

i do agree that we don't know what is going on in peoples lives, but i think just a hello or smile doesn't hurt anyone.

me and hubby have just helped push a 6 berth van onto the pitch next to us. We couldnt sit and watch the couple struggle, with young children and having to set up in the dark. Isnt this what its all about???

You can relate that back to any situation though, not just camping. I walk around the town where I live, I know plenty of people by sight & I always smile & say hello if we encounter each other. Most will respond in kind, a few don't & others just look a bit puzzled in a sort of "eh? who are you?" sort of way.

Its the same with helping folk. If anybody around me needs a hand I will help, but if somebody does not help push your caravan it could be because they have a bad back.

As pointed out, campsites have evolved & changed along with the rest of society. I recall in the early 70s there was a large area outside Newquay where everybody wildcamped. It certainly would not be allowed today.

When we are out for a walk wherever it may be, local park or Yorkshire
Dales we always say Hello to people we meet.We are quite often met with a stony face but the majority of walkers greet us back.

I'm from Yorkshire , and we are a friendly lot , with a trusting but wary nature , but when I lived down south , just north of London in Potters bar , you learn to be a lot more careful and not so trusting of strangers , it gets to the point where if people talk to you or smile at you , the odds are they're either after something or they're nutters . Since moving to Clacton though , I have gone back to my former , friendlier nature .

Purely personal opinion, but it is society changing. And not just caravanners, either. Personally, caravanners on a mixed site are much more likely to say hi or smile than motor-homers (sorry but that's my and friends' experience). And then there's an element of tenters who think they're superior too.

We all camp for different reasons, but common courtesy should remain, though increasingly it's sadly lacking.

I'm struggling to find a reason for anyone to not say morning or hello,I'm not asking them to stop and talk for half an hour, some of the reasons people have given for not speaking in my opinion are pathetic, or do they just think they are better than rest of us,the ones that really anoy me are one walking towards me and when getting close look the other way

As a tenter, I try and avoid conversation with 'Vanners & MH'ers etc... not that I'm ignorant, but just because I'd be embarrassed if they mentioned the fact I'd had the same tee-shirt on all weekend!
Must admit, I am jealous of the fact they seem to wear a freshly pressed shirt each day, and make a point of having different coloured slacks, so we can tell they have a wardrobe!

Hi Guys

Sorry to disagree, but I usually use The Caravan Club sites and it would be MOST unusual to pass anyone on site that didn't say hello, good morning or good night.

Maybe I have just a friendly face

If you have any respect for others, why are you having a go about them, just because they dont want to talk to you or join in with any activity that you might enjoy.       so show any respect you might have have by leaving them alone.

To be fair, that's pretty much our experience, wherever we camp, and regardless of the unit(s) used by our neighbours.
We're not ones to go looking for new "holiday friends"... quite the opposite in fact... but whenever we make eye contact with our camping neighbours, there's usually a "hello" of some sort in both directions.
The only exception is at 06.30, sat out front with my morning coffee... then it will be a manly raised arm, and silently mouth the word "Morning"... and hope to God they don't shout "GOOD MORNING" back at me!
Seriously, that has happened once! I was gobsmacked! We were (seemingly) the only two people on site who weren't still asleep in our beds!

Oh... and about this friendly face of yours... if your avatar is anything to go by, I think you need to retract that statement! Quite the opposite, I'd say!

Of course we are all likeminded! we like getting out and away in our caravans, motorhomes, or tents. We like the outdoor life. We like touring, scenery, and relaxing in the countryside. Some people like to talk and some don't. Just like anywhere. I wouldn't dream of passing anyone on the way to the loo and not saying hello. To not reply to that is just rude.
I have noticed a lot of Caravanity about in the last few years tho. Who's got the biggest shiney-est caravan? Who's outfit completely matches? (this is being taken to serious extremes) The "I've got the biggest 4x4 on the site" standoff is popular. We've had the "How dare you set out those horrible stained scruffy loungers beside our beautiful fully matching dining set" stare. Maybe that's just paranoia tho - its time for new loungers :)

Four years ago in France we had a new awning. While having our usual New Awning Erection Marital Breakdown, a dutch couple approached us with 2 chairs and a glass of wine each and asked did we mind if they came closer to watch the show? We couldn't do anything but laugh. I can imagine not everyone would have given them the reaction we did though.
