I would buy a cheap multimeter and check the pump yourself.

Check the pump on a 12volt battery, even your car battery will do. It might run in which case the problem is a wiring fault inside the van.

On that age van the pump is most likely switched on and off by a microswitch in each tap. turn the tap and if it clicks it's a microswitch. Modern vans have a single pressure switch to do the same job.

Try every tap to see if one will make the pump run.

There will be some wiring by the water inlet. check for voltage there.

Well, I've bought a connector to plug into a normal house socket and put the pump in a bucket of water, turned a tap on and it ran briefly! So, I'm charging the car battery that was in the van and I'll take another look at it tomorrow. Having pulled the pump wire right out of the hole it has been cut and chock blocked previously which seems pretty stupid as it can be submerged so think I need a new wire and the blue pipe covering which shouldn't be too expensive. I have discovered the micro switch on the cold kitchen tap doesn't click so I'll need to replace the tap (or just the switch?).

Hopefully that'll be that problem sorted!

Next question is, and I'm aware this is going to sound stupid - will my van have a battery charger? What will it look like and how can I test its operational?

In the cupboard with the RCD there's a large box with a fuse and a switch for 240v, two cables with grips to connect to the battery. On my control board there's the switch for car/van/off, a switch for the pump, one for the lights and one for auxiliary - what does the latter do?

Thanks again for your help!

Whether you can replace the tap microswitch will depend on the make of the taps. If they are Whale taps the microswitches are usually easy to replace. One of my taps was faulty and I had to replace the complete mixer because the switches were integral.

Having looked at the pictures of your interior, yours has some modifications compared to mine, and one of them is the charger. Mine has a Zig CF9 unit above the cupboard next to the door. This is a control panel and charger.

Your "large box" sounds like it may be your charger. The easiest way to check if your battery is charging is to switch off the mains supply to the van, connect a voltmeter to the battery, then switch on the mains. If the voltage at the battery doesn't rise, the battery isn't charging.

Colin

Hi. I've always used Bradshaw Caravan Services. He is based in Billingham and is extremely reliable. He doesn't overcharge and is thorough. He's even lent me equipment in the past when I've needed it in an emergency. Can't recommend him enough. (And no, I'm not a relation)!!

Right, so, some progress this evening!

I have discovered that the 'big box' is the battery charger. A Zig DCU-3. Should this always just be left switched on? And then, when it is, presumably it will charge the battery if connected?

I have also removed the submersible water pump. This is chock-blocked onto the part attached to the van. Is this normal?

Also, the circular bit below, water filter? I tried to turn it but it was pretty tight and I didn't want to force it.

As you can see from this pic, it was also chock-blocked right near to the pump, an interesting connection method for something submersible!

The last photo also includes the kitchen tap, the microswitches on this are gone so I've removed it and I'll check if ones available from my local parts store, if not, the whole tap is around £25 on ebay.

Finally, I presume the polystyrene wrapped item to the left of the pump inlet is the water heater. A Carver Cascade 2 according to the control panel.

Am I correct in thinking this operates on gas and before I try to turn it on I need to

A. Have both power and gas connected
B. Run water until it's coming out of all the hot taps to fill the boiler.
then C. Just flick the switch on the control panel?

edit: oops - missed one - what is the Aux switch for?

Thanks once again, for all your help!

Those taps are the ones I had on mine, and I couldn't find any way to get to the microswitches, so I changed them for Whale taps. More expensive, but he microswitches are easy to change.

Your charging system is completely different to mine, it has obviously been updated, as your van is 5 years newer than mine. I have no idea what the AUX switch is for, unless it controls a 12 volt socket somewhere, possibly for a TV? Looks like its turned off, so what doesn't work?

Personally I would get rid of those battery clips and replace them by proper terminals. Also, get rid of those choc-blocks! Especially the one that goes inside the water carrier! I would simply replace the pump.

Colin

If possible could someone please confirm that the water filter is supposed to twist out? It's absolutely solid, I'll almost certainly crack the filter or the housing if I try and use a tool to remove it?

Mine had obviously been broken for some time and bodged, so I replaced the whole thing with a more modern version of a water inlet, then installed a separate filter.

Thanks, I've managed to get it out without breaking it with a set of mole grips. As we're not planning on drinking the water in the van I've taken the filter part off the screw in part (technical terms I know!) and I'll just replace the screw to make the system water tight. Once the new tap is in (22.90 from ebay) I'll then run a load of water and miltons through it to clean it as much as I can.

As the van was so cheap I don't want to spend a fortune on it so I'll be replacing the pump (10l/pm) £9.95, and the blue hose at £5.75. I'll then wrap the choc-block tightly with some electrical tape.

Once all that's done I'll be ready to test the water heater! There are small knobs either side of it on the gas pipes, I'm guessing these are for the heater and the gas fire but I guess all will be revealed when it comes to trying it out.

Once I've fixed the water pump, checked the water heating and the fire we'll be ready to take it out for a test run. I actually can't wait!

new pump won't need choc block ..the new wire should be long enough to go straight to the electrical connection

To be honest, we don't drink the water that comes through the system either, we use a separate water bottle that we keep inside. Not really sure why I bothered with a filter in the cold tap to the sink, but I had a spare one lying around anyway.

Chock-blocks are fine, I use them too, just not inside the water container.

My water heater is gas only, and it works just great, heats up in less than 15 minutes. Later ones are gas/mains electric, which yours may be. I'm not sure when they started fitting those.

Enjoy your "new" van, we enjoy ours.
