We looked today at the show they attracted alot of interest and I think Theyr fab. Felt very roomy inside too and loved the air awning on the back. They will sell alot of these and if your towcar isn't up to pulling anything heavy they are perfect. If you buy anything new it depreciates in value,go with your instincts and enjoy your purchase if you decide to buy.

Got to agree with Cheryl, what a great spacious, light and airy little caravan.

We've been eyeing it up ever since launch in October and checking out the competition - Sprite Alpine variations (just a bit too big), Knauss Sport (bigger and a terrible bed), Freedom, and Lunar Ariva variants.

Because we'll be using it as a hill-walking all day base, if it doesn't have a tiny shower it's not competition in our book.

We're newbie caravanners coming from camping and B&Bs, and this is the first time we've seen a van we're taken with from the off.

So having viewed the Basecamp at Preston Caravans we went along to the Manchester show and were smitten by it's looks and clean lines. We are looking for some comfort, heating, cooking and shower - but not a home from home.

Anyway, we ordered the Basecamp at the show and glad we did as we seem to have taken one of the last 2 of the April manufacturing delivery. Very excited!

We opted for the Basecamp Plus pack (I can't imagine many who won't) and the awning. We might also go for a small porch awning like the Kampa Rally because the Basecamp awning is really like another room which we might only use occasionally (eg festivals for extra bods).

Now we have to do all the prep that most of you guys did years ago - hard standing in the back garden, equipment for the van, insurance, etc. Our only slight worry is that we have a shared driveway with a dog-leg into our back garden. I get a medium/large car in but it is a slight concern - we've done tests with a garden cane mock-up and it is OK. However, we might need a motor mover which seems ridiculous on such a small/light van!

Any advice most gratefully received, we'll let you know how we get on with it.

An advantage with the classic mover that might not be self evident is that the van goes nowhere it is not driven; inertia and free running play no part, it goes where it is told to hopefully the intended but nevertheless where you tell it.
However, it is a bit of a lump physically with its weight biting off the payload and its cost off your pocket and being a light van not essential. You just need to dwell on whether the precision of manoeuvring in tight, potential damaging locations it is worthwhile having.
All is not lost as for years with a light van I had the need for great precision and achieved this with a MR SHIFA tractor unit that drives via the hitch. These are now well out of favour with everyone going for wheel driven movers, but for the right tasks they are excellent and probably can be picked up for very little money on the secondhand market.[it is no longer made]. The limitations are weight of van and incline, so they can't move heavy vans on wet significant inclines. Another limitation is the overall length is increased, you have to have extra room to "drive" the van. Given that the unit lives at home, ideally on a smart charger to fill its carried battery, but you are not carrying weight off your payload. Though of course it is limited to helping only at home; however that is where I and it sounds you have a need for real precision.

Many thanks JT, hadn't thought of the braking aspect of a mover. The bulk and weight does bother us, we're plate upgrading the Basecamp but even so it's a small caravan.

We did see something like the device you mention but realise that the drawback is that it can only be used at home and is now defunct. Hadn't thought about the wet inclines issue, but that wouldn't be a problem if used at home only.
We did see a non-motorised version which, while not giving any motor support, may help with leveraged guidance.

We're both relatively fit so we'll give it a try pushing and pulling first. I guess the problem is that if the van sets off it could hit a gatepost before you've managed to restrain it manually!

If 2 of you are pushing it backward one can control it with the handbrake as you move it. Keep one hand on handbrake ready to yank it up as required. Provided your drive is flat it will be easy for 2 to control.

Of course (slaps forehead)forgot that the van has a brake also - thanks Opensauce.

Anyone have any thoughts on insurance, pots/pans and a TV?

Be very careful with caravan insurance as some companies hide details in the small print about where it can be stored. The caravan club is worth considering as their insurance is very good and although not the cheapest they offer good cover and u can use their network of sites /cls. Shopping for caravan items is my fave I love it. Online, on here and iv always gone with melamine plates etc, lightweight items. TV will depend on whether your gonna be hooked up or not so 12v may be a consideration? Hubby likes the technica ones from Tescos not too expensive and take USB so he puts movies on etc, not that we watch much tv but it's handy for our girls.
Congrats on your purchase it's very exciting I'm excited for you and you've done well to secure your van so early from swift! We ordered a 2017 model on 31st July last year and it was expected January this year, anyway we changed our mind and we now have to wait til April but we're not in a rush. It all depends what the dealers have put their names to and the build dates, they conc
entrate on entry level models such as sprite etc as they sell more so anything else takes longer to build.i reckon we will see a few of the Base camps around sites etc, and interesting to know that airstream have built one too called the Base camp so I wonder who thought of it first? Very similar too we watched it on YouTube have a look?

Just a point not to scare but by far best to know about:

The caravan's hand-brake is a novel device to facilitate auto release of the over-run brake when coupled up.
You need to understand that when uncoupled whilst it works as expected going forward, it can suddenly release itself going astern.
What happens is internally the shoes drop off when the drag on them detects moving backwards. To achieve a level of astern braking; that is reset the shoes after they trip off, the handbrake has to be applied fully[ vertical] to store that energy to reset the brakes in a big spring housed in a cylinder under the "A" frame.

All things that can be addressed if you know of the behavior, but it's something best not found out when things go wrong.

-----------------------------------

The manual, non powered hitch movers, are IMO as effective as a chocolate teapot.

Thanks again JT, MrsPooter and myself are attending a Caravan Club hitching and towing course before we receive the Basecamp so I'll ask for that issue to be demo'd.

Thanks also Cheryl for the advice on insurance - whatever kitchenware we buy it's got be easy to clean!

We're also thinking of putting a cheap mat in the shower tray when it's not being used as a shower so that ppl using the loo or washing don't scratch/dirty the tray.

Also seriously considering the Target logo on the outside - I know it's a waste of money in some ways, but I love it - very striking!

Fine if you happen to like it (and from reading the various replies it seems that I'm in a minority) but I really just don't get it. Here's why.

No doubt Swift will tell you that they spent years coming up with the concept from scratch, but you could be forgiven for thinking that they saw something called a 'Knaus Sport & Fun' which was launched last year, decided that they wanted a piece of that action and quickly cobbled this thing together. But with it being someone else's concept, Swift hasn't quite grasped it.

With the Knaus, which has a big 'garage space' at the front end, accessible from inside and outside the caravan and roomy enough for bikes or surfboards (not to mention muddy willies and wet coats), it does feel that its designers have put some thought into it. But the Basecamp, which has no storage space under the fold-down front seats and little canvas bags instead of proper cupbuards, is just going to get filthy very quickly.

And then Swift really shoot themselves in both feet by offering a 110kg payload. That air awning - and if you've ever tried to lift a box containing one, you'll know it weighs 300 tons - and a couple of bikes will eat up that capacity on their own - not sure where you're supposed to put pans, plates, food, clothes, your wife's toiletries etc etc.

And yet according to the Practical Caravan reviews, the Swift is nearly a grand more expensive.

So there. That's my review. Have I missed something?

Not at all Sam, you're welcome to your opinion.

We looked at the Knauss and here are our reasons for not buying it

- While being virtually the same width, the Knauss is about 20% longer than the Basecamp, in fact bigger than the Sprite Alpine as far as I can tell. I'm not sure I could fit the Knauss into my back garden via the dog leg in our driveway.
- The bed has a cut-out at the bottom of one side and poor headroom for the person sleeping against the front wall, even if lowered. Plus the person against the wall has to clamber over the other person to get out (eg to the loo in the middle of the night)
- Our concern about the large outside door garage is that the door is under the bed and could make it cold
- I don't need a separate sitting area, which ends up making the van bigger.
- Not sure about the muddy willies (!) or what the canvas bags have against them. I beg to differ, there is space under the fold down seats just not the garage available when the Knauss bed is winched up. At that height you couldn't sleep on the bed so it's only for travelling.
- However, I take your point about the bikes being accessible from the outside, but despite the urging of the Swift video (do they sell bikes or caravans?) we won't be using bikes. If it's rainy/muddy walking boots, they can be taken off in the awning (or Kampa Rally 200 as we will get that also), or rinsed off with the outside shower head and put on some newspaper under a sofa seat or shower to dry. I've had far worse in a tent, but it is a good point you make.
- If the awning weight is an issue it'll go in the car which has capacity in its own right and as part of the train. For other items, we'll have some walking gear and basic civvies to change into, possibly a small TV, 4 sets of melamine crockery, 4 sets of cutlery, 4 mugs, 4 wine glasses, 4 tumblers, chopping board, small kettle, 2 medium pans and a frying pan.
- It's British which would only usually sway me when all other factors are equal, but this is a better van also IMHO.

PS and unfortunately I found the Knauss quite dark inside at the show

Sport&Fun first came out in mid 90s. Not really sold in UK though. First caravan I can think of with same layout as Base Camp was rear door Kip Kompackt in 1980s. A Dutch 'van again never really imported to UK & several other caravans, ABI Adventurer badged as Beyerland in Holland & so on. It's part of a niche market that has always been there.

I can't see why it's so expensive though, similar price in Holland as well so not a ripoff Britain thing. Mostly see this style of caravan down in southern Europe in summer. Good for fast towing long distance if you just need somewhere to sleep & cook.

The van is pricey unfortunately, while the cost of the Plus pack is cheap in comparison given the extras you get.

As for the Southern Europe, I think it'll be the Lakes just up the road this year for us until we get more used to towing, though I am going to take it to Cropredy Festival near Banbury.

We have a Swift Basecamp on order , picking up early April . We looked at all the other small options and found this one to be the best for us , the headroom for my husband is fantastic . The awning is enormous which is slightly daunting as we may over spread some pitches & will be interested to here how the Kampa Rally fits & performs. We will probably get a Vango 200 sun canopy to use on short breaks .
Since selling our Camplet trailer tent 18 months ago & then hiring campers we are excited to be getting back to the freedom of camping & having our very first caravan .
