Bailey Jake the panels in question was the same for most manufactures, they are made elsewhere and not by Bailey. As Bailey are the largest independent producer in the uk their name is on more than others so obviously the faulty percentages would be higher. This is not my view but are the words of a leading caravan repairer I was speaking to on this subject. I do understand though how disappointing this is for anyone who has suffered and of course they should be made better in the first instance.

Sorry to here this MLC but, like 1000s before you a case of not taking a damp meter with you.
This will help with your repairs "The fix it club" top right of the link..Click

When I bought my caravan nearly 12 months ago, From Wiltshire caravans, I took my damp meter checked it over, no worrying damp readings, now nearly 12 months on I suddenly have 40% damp in one corner where a couple of weeks ago it was 23%

And I walked away from a number of horror stories at other large dealers. (Stowford caravans) One 2009 lunar I looked at was so damp under the bunk bed that there was fungus growing and the corner steady had pushed through the rotten floor. I was disgusted they had the nerve to try to sell it to me. When I told the sales lady what I found she said "all caravans have a bit of damp"

Surely Bailey s quality control should have nipped it in the bud. I was told of the scale of the problem by a caravan engineer who had worked for a Bailey dealer. He told me the scale of the problem was so large and the warranty claims so extensive it nearly bankrupted Bailey. Looking around there are these cracks on a lot of series 5 and 6 bailies I have seen about the place I store my van.

Sounds to me that quality control has deteriorated considerably over the years. Some caravans, of all makes I am sure, were better made than others. I too have an Elddis, but mine is getting on for 30 years old. It's not perfect, as is only to be expected, but it is perfectly habitable and usable, but more to the point it has survived all these years. Maybe they are not so well built these days?

Bailey jake I quite agree but I suppose that while people still buy new vans the problems will never be cured. The cracks are on many different vans as I was shown recently however I understand that those who had been repaired are now ok. I had a new Ranger in 2005 which was recalled and a new panel fitted and I never had any further issues, at the time I was totally unaware of the problem so I now feel my dealer did look after me. I have a 2008 Ranger now I checked it well when I purchased it and it is crack free so may be this had been repaired earlier too.
Weather conditions can effect moisture readings and when things dry up a bit you may find your readings will drop

A mate bought an Elddis Avante without a warranty - from a dealer. Hes already had to fork out for the well-known roof-light fix, damp under the bed, and bits generally falling off.

Agreed caravans are expensive simple objects ,a car has thousands of moving parts yet you can buy one for less than a new caravan . A caravan is a posh shed on a trailer it is not rocket science to make them to a reasonable standard .

I bought a brand new Bailey Unicorn Valencia in 2015 and I have covered the problems I had in a previous post. I am hoping to get problems resolved in the next service. I am in a position to buy a new caravan again if I have a head-loss, but at my age, I won't be planning too far ahead. Hopefully I shall retain my sanity and buy my next caravan from a private seller when it's a couple of years old and problems sorted out. I'll use my judgement to assess the seller and probably pay a few quid for inspection by a professional. Best of luck with getting your caravan sorted out, but now I'm on my seventh caravan, I consider buying privately to be the best option as long as you take whatever precautions are available.

We have a 14 Unicorn Vigo which has been great apart from a broken bed frame, which was just out of the warranty and Bailey would not fix it, annoying but so far the only issue. It is our 5th Bailey, no major problems with any.

What is bad is that certain manufacturers cannot deliver consistent quality.
The UK bike and car industry learned the hard way about quality, let us hope the caravan industry do improve. I am sure they are trying as warranty repairs are costly.

How many posh sheds are on wheels and bounce about the roads?

When you think about how inherently flimsy something like a caravan is, having such as weakened joints letting moisture in, is almost guaranteed at some stage.

So to have zero, or minimal damp in a caravan, is about as much as you could hope for, i would think. Given all the 'holes' in the structure, not to mention corner/roof/floor joints, i am amazed how any stay 'damp free'at all..

If they bought from a dealer then they woudl have been covred under the Sale of Goods Act or the new Consumer Rights Act 2015. A warranty is a worthless piece of paper used to fool people as it does not over ride either SOGA or CRA 2015.

It seems that that manufactures warrantees are for the benefit of the dealer, the dealer can then claim back (or try to) any cost they have incurred while doing work carried out under the Consumer Rights Act 2015

My wife & I purchased a new 2011 Elddis Avante 462,we have used it every year , for 3 months through the summer, touring. It goes for the annual service, to keep the warrantee in force, so far we have not had one single problem with it.
We are lucky as we can store it on our drive, all winter I have a small fan heater running on a time clock, which keeps the van well aired, so the problems you have had we not encountered. Perhaps we have been lucky.

We had an Elddis Avante 524 for 10 years. Serviced and damp tested annually, sold it last year and it was bone dry - as it had been every day since it left the factory.
Build quality was OK, but then it was a pretty lightweight van at the lower end of the Elddis range.

Pretty much pot-luck buying a van built in the 2000`s as they were all built in the same way - glue and screws, with mastic joints. Getting a good one was down to the individual having a good day, and that`s about it.
My brother bought a Coachman because "they were properly built", which had three major repairs under warranty as it had the water repellant properties of a sponge.

At least nowadays manufacturers are trying new methods of build. Which will prove to be the most resilient we will have to wait and see.

So far my Swift with smart construction has proved faultless, but time will tell.

Not necessarily Trunnion. At the other end of the scale, our 1988 Elddis Tornado, bought cheap off ebay in 2013, is still going strong and doing us proud. In all probability there is good and bad in all makes and models.
