Essentially, the more mod-cons you require, the more you will pay. Club or non-club. Bottom line is a field with a tap and a chemical disposal point - usually a manhole cover in the corner of the field or farm yard. And thats your lot. You can find these for about £8/10 a night. Sometimes you will get EHU thrown in - or even a loo (basic in the extreme) for the 'tenner' site. After that, if you want showers/pot washes/info cabins etc., you are approaching the £20 mark. Definitely, and often well over, for Club Sites - member or not.

You can do worse than a round trip of an area you fancy just in the car, taking in maybe half dozen sites. Just have a nosey round, and have a quick word with the owner about facilities and prices. Ive done this a few times now, often booking sites that were 'maybes' at best, and binning ones i had down as 'certs', once actually landing on them and seeing what they were really like - thankful i didnt have the van and kit in tow.

Hi Marg, just thought with the sites being smaller in general and some without dedicated play areas there would be more chance of children being told off. I wasn't implying they'd have nothing to do, there's always loads for the little uns to do, that's the beauty of camping/caravanning.

Think I'll start having a scout round for some of these 5 van sites. Although my daughter does like a games room especially table tennis.

with the difference in the cost per night 9 around £15 on a cl/cs for the whole family and ehu, I think I would be telling my kids that they can find some other toys to play with before I pay any of the daft prices for the all singing all dancing prices they charge

Nutkins, just use Camp Site Search - just choose your area, select "Only Club CL / CS" and whatever other facilities you would like/need.

We use CLs/CSs almost exclusively, and have found some real gems (and a few horrors). £15 over Christmas/New Year for a CL with loos and showers. Many of them don't seem suitable for children though, not enough room to run around.

We use C&CC certificated sites, and have never paid more than £15 per night. We never use the big Club sites, far too expensive. We also go to weekend rallies, and THS (temporary holiday sites). Most of the rallies are around £10 per night, yes, you need your own facilities, but there's usually some form of entertainment, things for the kids to do, activities etc. Some of the THS are held on sites with access to all facilities, such as Hendra in Cornwall, for a fraction of the cost of booking direct. You don't always need to book rallies or THS, just turn up. If it's a booked meet it will say in advance.

If you find a 5-van site with a table tennis room, i will come and be the 'ball boy'!

This is the thing, some folk want to pay nowt (not having a go at Nutkins here) but expect the earth.

One place in Cumbria had in its guest book (for £16. a night) folk wanting, besides the already supplied info cabin, free showers and loos; a radiator in said cabin (that just had a few leaflets etc.), a pot wash, and somewhere to dry their towels!

Lol, hope your pretty fit Mick S, because the ball is rolling around on the floor more than on the table!!!
To be honest I wouldn't expect these sites to have loads of facilities which is reflected in the price usually.

We've stayed at one which did have free showers, for £12.50 per night.

We store our van now at a site which used to be a CS, but is not now, as there's more than 5 pitches. It has pot wash, showers are 20p for 3 minutes, space for the kids to play, charges no extra for awnings, or dogs; it's £11 per night including hook up.

We also stay at a CS site in Staffordshire (voted best new CS 2015) where all 5 pitches are super pitches, with own hook up, water, and waste. Stunning views. No showers or toilets, but who cares? It's well worth the 15 per night, no extra charge for awnings or dogs.

Do Cl's / CS's have a shower block and EHU??

That's all we would want on a site. But have never really looked into them...

definitely a yes on the ehu, and most will have toilets and often a shower aswell, just ask the owners before booking

Going to look more into this then Marg, thanks....

We don't camp in the UK, so limited value in joining either ... gave up after one year some time ago.
It's worth joining if you think you'll gain by saving on what you'd spend if you don't join.
Otherwise ... for advice etc ... there's plenty around ... eg on here ... but lots of other places, too.

You will probably find that you can get better/cheaper breakdown cover by being a member of either. We have used many C/S,s and never been disappointed but only two C&CC sites. Both were in fantastic locations but the manageress of one left a lot to be desired in her attitude. Also, if you go on holiday together with someone tenting the C/S,s also accept tents if there is room.
