Our experience in France seems to show the (mainly)Dutch use their motor movers to position their vans side facing the sun, often across the back of the pitch. Sunshade over that side, for sitting out. And if there's an empty pitch next door or opposite, they park their car there, preventing others from choosing that pitch.
Because we have a tiny van, there are some sites we use with less well marked pitches, we position the van in such a way to prevent 'theft' of our space. We have come back on the bikes to find a new arrival on the next pitch have set up their table and chairs on ours. Once we came back and there was another small campervan parked next to us!

When camping in the UK we generally use Caravan Club sites and find the pitches are so generous that there's always plenty of room between neighbours, no matter where they put their car. The sites we use aren't at all regimented as the pitches are in small groups, often in woodland settings (eg Ferry Meadows, Peterborough.)
------------- Il vaut mieux vivre ses reves que rever sa vie
We much prefer sites that aren't regimented. Rows of caravans as close together as permitted, all in a line either side of a roadway is a bit too formal for our liking. We prefer sites like the C&CC one at Sandringham, where caravans were sited seemingly at random among the trees. We have also visited the Hertford C&CC site for a rally, and that tends to have caravans dotted about rather than in regimented rows. We like that one so much we would go there more often, but it's only 10 minutes drive from home.
