Totally agree with Wetherby services, they are a bit further south than Scotch Corner, but believe me they are much bigger and more "caravan friendly".

Wethrby would be too short a journey and you might have to stop again. We regularly travel from Sheffield to Durham and Wetherby is just over 1 hour up the road from your place. The Darlington or Durham services are ok. The do the minimum as the majority of Brit motorway services do. If you fail to stop in the Durham area you then have the western bypass to contend with past Newcastle and that can be hell on wheels even with the newly widened road. The Tyne Tunnel is not much better. If you hit either of the two roads at peak times expect to sit and relax in your car as you crawl along. If you come off the A1M at J58, and you can park up at Kimberley caravans 1/2 mile along on your right - so,take the first exit at J58, follow the road to the next roundabout and come back on yourself to Kimberley's. Park in there - visit the vans, go to the loo and return along the dual carriageway to J58. BINGO Sorted.

Update re Barton services...the slip-road is due to re-open on 12th MAY.You can access this place via a short detour from Scotch corner at the moment and getting back onto the A1 is just as normal.
I wouldnt recommend the A19/tyne tunnel route at the moment...bad roadworks as soon as you exit the tunnel up to and beyond the A1058.
You could go into the metro-centre coach park for a while.It is a huge area and not only for coaches.It is signposted and is at the rear of the centre keeping you out of the main traffic with easy access back onto the A1. Dont tell anybody

I'm wondering now if it was Barton we stopped at. The one I'm thinking of didn't have a slip road, you just pulled straight off the A1. Old looking fuel pumps, lorries parked at the rear, cars down the side, a water tap at the front near the pumps.

Thats not Barton Wendy..could be the old shell garage just before Scotch corner? No longer there but the little chef is still going.Barton is a couple of miles further up..down a slip road..right at the roundabout..and right again after a short while.Its a very large parking area with fuel and cafe.

Barton is a place to stop - and that is about it. It is primarily a truck stop - huge open area with a bit of a cafe. Not particularly pleasant, but chacun a son gout.

Thanks for the replies, we have 3 dogs, one is very old and one doesn't travel well, plus me and Mrs have back trouble 4 hrs is a bit much, might just stop at wetherby then do the rest and hope our backs are ok to set up😀

Took us about 5 hours from Foston, South Derbyshire, A50, A38, M1, A1. We could have done it quicker but we too had the dogs with us. Roadworks slowed us down a bit too. Wherever it was we stopped at, (this was last August) it was about 3 hours or so into the journey. There was space to park our large twin axle, and plenty of room to take the dogs for a toilet break and good leg stretch.

Went up to Newcastle today and passed the servoces at Birtley / Washington. There is a big lorry / caravan parkinmg area there. You could stop there if you wish. Does the job , but nothing flashy / nor green.   If you don't stop there then you will have to go all the way through Newcastle before you get anywhere to stop and it is probably far too far for a half way. You do right to stop after a couple of hours or so. A 4/5 hour drive is just barmy. You have all day to get here and you will need a rest never mind the dogs. Why people insist on driving gor hours on end is unbelieveable

One downside of the wagon parks, is that if you are stuck next to a freezer lorry - of which there can be many in warmer weather, and the units are going all the time, you are guaranteed no sleep. Has to be thought about!

If you are wanting an overnight stop try Greengate Farm campsite 5 mins from Leeming Bar services. With the new Bedale bypass it is so easy to get to and is just through crakehall on the beadle to leyburn road.
