I can't comment re new van leaking but we had the same problem with a new Land Rover Discovery. Spotted a leak shortly after pick up, complained and it was repaired and it was repaired and it was repaired.

Alarm bells were ringing and we should have returned it straight away and got a refund. We didn't and even up to when we changed cars 10 yrs later, we were still having intermittent problems with the leak. Hindsight is a wonderful thing...but we have learned our lesson. If something is not right when new esp water ingress we would demand refund and would not put up with repairs.

I know its off topic but thought I would share.

Thanks Ray, i wouldn't mind a leaking compression fitting or a drain line, whatever, but a window not being water tight should be something that cant happen. The process should be robust, or at least QC should pick it up. It reminds me of buying a new build house in this country, everybody in the street has a 4 page snagging list. We are supposed to be confidant about a British manufacturing revival and Brexit, cant even make a watertight caravan in 2018. Bad for the blood pressure.
I've got two young boys, 3 trips planned this year with what we think is the perfect bunk bed layout. The refund route is a heartbreaking thought

We rejected a caravan after 11 months as the faults reported in the first 30 days were still there. We also found out that the 30 day period had been suspended until the repair was completed to the satisfaction of both parties. We got a refund plus compensation. It did stress us out a bit but was well worth the effort so do not be afraid about claiming your statutory rights.
As suggested have a nice polite chat with the dealer first as this leak is not something any dealer would have picked up on a PDI. If there is any unreasonable delay then you may need to start getting firm with the dealer.

I have been looking for a used van for a few months now. I read the reports on this site about Bailey vans and water leaks, so we crossed Bailey off our list. Coachman is on my list.

Who was the dealer?

Luck of the draw with any caravan new or used... first van an Elddis from new loads of problems which were all sorted, including a major damp issue.

Vowed I would never buy a new caravan again, exchanged it for a second hand Swift and even that had a couple of issues.. which are sorted now ...I hope

All, some asked for an update. Thanks all for the kind advice to keep me calm. I asked my caravan storage people if they would help, they have a service garage and wash bay. I used the wash bay to hose the front windows and sky light.
Couldn’t see any water. The chap that does the body repairs knew what he was doing, checked all the seals. He said the sky light was sealed with silicone, he would re-seal that at service, and the two front smaller window seals were a bit suspect. He could lift the edges which are supposed to be glued down. He showed me how to give them a quick re-seal. I’ve put a small bead on black sealant around the edge. So it’s a mystery why I had a puddle of water, we couldn’t repeat it with a hose, but you can’t simulate a one-hour trip with high winds and heavy rain, van buffeting about. Still a theory some water would get in the air vents with the high winds.
Frustrating we never found the problem but also relieved I don’t seem to have a major issue. I’ll be getting it serviced at the storage centre, they have an approved Bailey engineer. Overall I’m reasonably happy,,, and ecstatic, the storage facility can service my van for £175. I don’t even need to take it out, just hand in my keys. The body repairs expert said to me, to put it down for a water test at service and he would check it all over again and redo my roof light

If your van is covered by a dealer / manufacturers warranty...

DO NOT UNDERTAKE ANY UNAUTHORISED REPAIRS, no matter how small as you will void any warranty you HAD..

Take it back to the dealer...Baileys have a 10 years warranty ...let them sort it out or ask for your money back.

Couldn't find a leak, just added some extra sealant where it was sparse, not something that could be identified as non original bailey sealant
If i had found a problem my intention was to take the van back to the dealer. We ran a strong hose all over the sky light and front windows. Had a professional do it for me. Checked everything inside and out. No issues, apart from what i mentioned which didnt warrant taking it back to the dealer. I'm sure living in Scotland with trips to the west coast, if there is a problem it will come back. I've reported it and I've put it in writing

I am sorry but a warranty is basically a worthless piece of paper as it does not over ride the CRA 2015 which is what one would use for any claims. Anyway the manufacturer would only void the warranty for the area where you attempted an unauthorized repair.

Personally I would want to keep the dealer on side. If you rant and rave he will think of you as someone always complaining. Then when something else goes wrong he won't take you seriously. Oh it's only him banging on again.

I would want to be seen as a level headed reasonable man so when I complain, I really have something to complain about.

If you go the self repair route, you may close off the option of having the backup of the dealer if the repair is unsuccessful. They will say you botched it.

Does the dealer know you have a leak. If so, he will want to ensure it is repaired properly.

I'm afraid returning the van for repair is the norm. Your warranty conditions will say that.

Agree ranting and raving may not be helpful. BUT you have to let them know who I is boss, and that is you the customer. If ever I have a consumer is, which has been some time now, I am very firm and TELL the supplier what I want and will never back down.

But there is no way would I accept a faulty new caravan, they would have one chance to make a fully satisfactory repair, next it would be a full refund.

British caravan manufacturers have got away with building rubbish for far too long.

i would suggest taking it out for a drive in the rain and see if you get anything....

our last van (sprite major which we sold at 4 yrs old) would do the same in a strong headwind in the pouring rain...which i could never replicate it in the yard with a hose.

I guessed that the slipstream over the car seemed to put pressure in just the wrong place in the window seal and a little water would always creep in. It never happened with the previous car, and it never happened when I put the roof box on the current car.

We have the Palermo now, and not had any water issues with this.

Baileys leak. Yes some do.
Bailey have Damp issues. Yes they do.
So crossed of your list.
You may as well cross every van made in the UK off your list.
They have all had models that have leaked from new at sometime or another and have damp.

And so much depends on the dealer's PDI.

Jasie, that’s interesting. I’ve got a front cover for it, if it is a wind and rain combination, the front cover might help

Not one to pick but the windows rubbers shouldn’t have any extra sealant around the edges. Baileys either have a mastic tape places around the window the a window rubber fitted which also has a sealant on a lipped edge, these two are then meant to bond together the other way they have also done it in the past is just with the sealant from the window rubber bonding direct to the van. If any part of the window rubber wasn’t correctly stuck to the van then a new window rubber is needed. Sealing around the rubber is a short term fix.
